“And you,” I protested. “I really enjoyed chatting with you. I don’t have many female friends.”

Aithan and I walked them out then returned to the kitchen to unload the dishwasher.

A cellphone sat on the counter beside the fridge. I picked it up. “Whose is this?”

“Uh-oh.” Aithan took it. “That’s Candy’s.” He pulled his own phone from his pocket. “I’ll text Tobias.”

I kept unloading the dishwasher, wiping moisture off the glasses as he texted.

I looked up when he muttered, “Kurde.” His brows were furrowed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Something at the gym. I gotta deal with this.” He went out to the balcony and made a call. I kept busy and tried not to eavesdrop.

“It’s Aithan. Is Juan free?” He paused, waiting. “Hey, man, what happened?”

Finished with the unloading, I changed into yoga pants and a loose sweater then fetched my laundry and sorted it across the kitchen floor. The laundry room was adjacent to the kitchen. After putting up the first load I took a few minutes to clean the litter box in the first-floor bathroom.

I was coming out of the garage after dumping the stinky stuff in the trash, when the doorbell rang.

It was Tobias.

“I came for Candy’s phone.”

“Sure, come on in.”

He followed me upstairs where we found Aithan sitting on the couch, wearing a scowl.

“Everything okay?” I asked.

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Tristan got written up.”

“Oh no.” I washed my hands at the kitchen sink and poured a glass of water. “What’d he do?”

“He was talking about me and my personal life in front of clients.” He shook his head. “First time Juan’s had to warn a trainer.”

I sat beside him. “Think he’s trying to get fired?”

He shrugged. “I have no idea what he’s thinking.”

“He’s not,” Tobias replied. “He’s just pissed off and doesn’t know how to handle being mad.”

“He spat in Zelda’s face Wednesday afternoon.”

“What?” Tobias looked from him to me, his eyes wide. “You fucking serious?”

“Yeah,” Aithan replied. “I drove her downtown to file for a protection order.”

“Holy shit,” he muttered. “The guy’s losing it.”

“I don’t understand why,” I said. “He really didn’t give a shit about me when we were together, he made that abundantly clear. And, yeah, I took the initiative and dumped his ass, but not getting his way or not getting to make that move doesn’t really explain why he’s so hellbent on fucking up his life and mine.” I snuggled against Aithan and he wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

“You know what, Zel? This part of this mess is my problem, not yours.” He turned my face toward him and kissed me, his lips caressing mine, his tongue sweeping my lower lip and eliciting a little moan from me.

“Ahem, still here, lovebirds,” Tobias said.

I giggled and sat back. “He came for the phone.”
