I nodded. “You’re right.”

“And they found my ride.”

“Where?” Candace pulled another chair close to the bed and sat. Tobias leaned on the back of it, his hand on his sister’s shoulder.

“Umm, Shoreline, I think? I’m a little hazy on the whole thing.” He looked back at me. “You’ll hear from a police ocifer.”

“You mean officer,” Tobias said as we all chuckled.

“Right,” Aithan said, “Ocifer Calvin or something like that. His card is here somewhere. Wants to ask you about Tristan.”

“Yeah, I thought so,” I said.

Aithan nodded, then looked confused. “You did?”

“They questioned him at my place this morning,” Candace explained.

“Seriously?” He shook his head then winced. “Don’t think he’d do this.”

“He didn’t,” I assured him.

Tobias said, “You don’t know that for sure, Zel.”

“Yes, I do.”

Aithan was watching us, confusion still on his face. “How?”

Fuck, I thought. He was not going to like my answer.Rip the bandage off fast, Zel.I sucked a deep breath.

“Zel?” Aithan tugged my hand.

“Tristan came to my place last night. To apologize. He stayed to talk for a few hours, then I sent him home.”

“He went to see you?” His grip tightened.

“Yeah. He showed up around eleven-thirty.”

He frowned. “You shouldn’t’ve let him in.”

I looked at our hands. “I know, but I did.”

He nodded slowly. “It’s good you did. Now you can vouch for him.”

“Maybe that’s exactly why he went to Zelda’s house,” Tobias said.

I looked up. “What?”

“You’re an alibi.” Candace slowly nodded. But the nod turned into a shake. “No, I agree with Zel. Tris is an idiot, but he’s not a threat to anyone except himself.”

“Absolutely,” I agreed.

“How do you know?” Tobias argued.

“Because I’ve known him since I was six.”

Aithan grunted. “Call the police, Zel. He’s innocent.”

I nodded and pulled my phone from my purse as Candace found the card the detective had left on Aithan’s hospital table.
