“Yeah. Go on. Go flaunt your muscles at the woman.” I said and he grinned, handing the joey to me as he climbed onto Trigger.

I looked down at its face, the little whiskers and black eyes that looked so innocent, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“See? Even you can’t resist.” He teased and I rolled my eyes, handing him the joey.

“Just don’t you forget that I am out here doing all the work,” I said and he saluted me before taking off.

I watched them disappear and realized I kind of hoped his plan worked. I wouldn’t mind getting to know her a little more, to understand the woman that he talked about and why she seemed so haunted.

Not that it was any of my business.

I got to work on digging the hole first, smiling to myself as I realized that even in death, there is always life.

“Soasyoucansee based on the sales over the past year, I am not expecting that you will fetch a high price at this point.” The agent said and I sighed.

I could see Mama hovering in the background, wringing her hands as Damien flicked through the last sales.

Beau was glaring at me as he sipped his coffee, and I could see the vein pulsing in his temple as he tried to control his temper.

“My suggestion would be to wait for at least twelve months before you consider selling. The market should improve then. The weather bureau is predicting a good wet season this year which should give some relief from the drought and see prices begin to improve.” He continued.

I stared at the various properties in front of me that had sold in the past year and felt a pang of sadness. I recognized so many.

“Do you know why so many of these people sold?” I asked and the agent raised a brow.

“Shouldn’t come as a surprise that most of them sold either because they needed to retire and no one wanted to take it over, or because they just couldn’t afford it anymore.” He said and I glanced at Beau when he slammed his coffee cup onto the table.

“I’ll leave you to think on things. You have my details.” He said and Mama rushed to see him out, always a stickler for hospitality. I bit back a snide remark about not fucking him on the way out when Damien leaned over and tapped my shoulder.

“Hey. I don’t like that guy. What kind of advice is telling you to wait? The price could get worse.” He said and I sighed.

“It was honest advice. People out here don’t lie about things like this.” I didn’t know the agent personally but he came from a town near ours so he was local and knew his stuff.

“I still think you should get another opinion. Or just put it on the market anyway.” Damien continued and I studied him. Why did he seem so insistent about this now? Beau was staring at him like he was ready to rip his head off.

“Stop pushing her,” he said quietly and Damien rolled his eyes.

“I’m not. She made it clear that she had no intention of staying and wanted to sell. You people will try to trick her into anything to get your way.” He said and I bristled. Was he implying that I couldn’t think for myself?

“You people?” Beau repeated and I groaned inwardly. I had to diffuse this now.

“You don’t have to stay here, Damien. I am not going to rush this decision, contrary to what my attitude may have been. I may not want any part of this place, but I do have to consider everyone else’s livelihood as well.” I said and he glared at me then at Beau.

“Whatever. I’m not leaving until you are. I’m going back to bed. It’s hot as fuck here and the damn bugs chirping all night kept me up.” He muttered before stomping down the hall.

“He seems like a great bloke,” Beau said, sarcasm dripping from his voice.

“I would ask if you were staying with him for the sex but you and I both know he is lacking in that department as well.” He crooned and I felt my cheeks heat.

“So why are you with him, Anya?” He asked, his eyes piercing my soul. He was right. I wasn’t in love with Damien, I don’t know if I even cared about him. So why was I with the guy?

I stood, wanting to get out of the room and Beau’s intensity. He didn’t push, didn’t try to stop me and I paused at the door, seeing Mama still talking to the agent about his daughter.

“He makes me forget,” I said quietly, feeling my shoulder ache as the memories crept in.
