Anya’sbreathylaughwasmaking me feel things I shouldn’t be feeling in public. I watched her as she leaned in to hear the guy tell his story, his voice getting drowned out by the sound of every other person in the pub as they got louder and louder.

I wasn’t even sure what his story was about, my thoughts only on the beautiful woman in front of me.

I knew she had slept with Wyatt last night and it was also clear when he walked away from her that he had every intention of making it a permanent situation.

I should have been jealous, mad, or angry like my pig-headed brother was, but I liked Wyatt and I wasn’t afraid of a little competition.

Though I wasn’t overly keen on the competition in this pub right now. I wasn’t the only one who had eyes on her tonight and the guy she was talking to had been moving closer and closer with each joke and he was now close enough that his arm brushed hers.

“You know, I haven’t seen you around here. Are you a tourist or something?” He asked as I moved towards them, intent on staking my claim.

She may not have agreed with me yet, but she was mine. Especially here.

“No. I own Devils Hart Ranch. I’ve just never come to any rodeo events before. Not really my thing.” She said as she shrugged and took a long swig of her beer.

“You own the ranch you said?” His eyes lit up and I grit my teeth. He was looking at her like she was an easy score now.

“Yes.” She said, a little stiffly.

He recognized the tension and switched his tactic, brushing her shoulder casually.

“So, this is your first time at a rodeo then? You know what they say…” He said with a wink, and she raised an eyebrow.

“What do they say?” she asked, glancing at me as I moved in behind him.

“Save a cow, ride a cowboy.” He grinned like he had told the most original and funny joke ever heard. She snorted and chuckled politely, but her eyes met mine over his shoulder in a look of exasperation.

“’scuse me, mate, the only cowboy she will be riding tonight is me.” I gripped his shoulder firmly, smiling but the warning was there.

He eyed me up and down before he smirked.

“Who are you? Her kid brother?” He sneered and I squeezed him harder, leaning in so he wouldn’t miss a word I said.

“No. I’m her man and unlike you, I know how to give a woman a long, hard ride. It’s all in the thighs you know. You have to be able to thrust at just the right speed.” I grinned when he looked me over again.

“Aren’t you that rodeo kid? Daley, right?” He asked and I pointed my finger at him, clicking my tongue.

“You got it. A cowboy through and through.” I glanced at Anya who was watching me with amusement.

“Hey man, I love your style. But I know that this ain’t your girl. She already said she wasn’t with anyone. There are plenty of buckle bunnies around. Go find your own.” He stood taller and I sighed.

“Hey. I am no buckle bunny.” Anya said with a hint of annoyance. He glanced at her, seeing he was losing her interest.

“I never said that. You’re just a really hot sheila…” I was done with this guy. I gripped the back of his neck, pulling him closer.

“That’s no way to talk to my girl. Apologise.” I snarled and he snorted.

“For what? Complimenting her?” He said as he tried to push my arm away.

“If that’s how you compliment people, I would hate to see an insult,” Anya muttered before she put her hand on my arm.

“Leave it, Will. He isn’t worth it.” She said softly, her eyes begging me to let it go. I sighed, pushing him away.

“Get fucked.” I snarled and the guy was smart enough to walk away with barely a glance at Anya.

She looked at me as she took the last drink of her beer.

“Are you claiming me like I am some kind of piece of property, William Daley?” If it wasn’t for the amusement I could see in her eyes, I would have thought she was pissed at me.
