“I don’t understand… you’re dead,” I whispered as the man who had been my father my entire life walked towards us.

Beau’s eyes widened as he coughed, struggling for breath and Austin glanced at him, a look of annoyance and disgust before he looked back at me.

“Little Anya. There is a lot you don’t understand about this world.” He said and I shook my head.

He was dead. He was dead!

My mother said it was a heart attack. He had been buried.

“I don’t get it. You died of a heart attack. Mama buried you! You loved me.” I said as I tried to piece together the events.

“You were a means to an end, Anya. All part of a bigger plan. I did die. It was planned out. At a set time, I would induce a heart attack but the ambulance officers and the doctors in charge brought me back.” He shrugged as if it meant nothing.

“Then we signed everything over to you. It was supposed to be an easy transfer, we hoped you would sell and there would be no way to trace anything back to the fellowship. But you decided to stay.” He said and the look of annoyance he gave me was almost hilarious.

“What about Vlad? Did you know about him?” I asked and he smiled, sitting down in a chair that someone offered him.

“How do you think the Russians found out about you? They got a tip from me.” He said and I tried to take a breath, trying to understand what was happening as I looked down at Beau, bleeding all over me.

“I still don’t understand. Why did you marry Mama? Why even bother signing it over to me in the first place if you were a part of the Fellowship? Why did you pretend you had signed on with them and tell Beau and the others that you were stuck with Sergei?” the words tumbled out of me as I realized he also organized Sergei.

“You knew what Sergei would do to Mama,” I said, disgust hitting me.

“Yes. I knew. I also knew he wouldn’t hurt her. Not really. I had to play the whimpering fool for years. Pretending that I was someone I wasn’t. It was never about you or Grace. It was always about Gideon.” He said.

“The Fellowship don’t like to have things traced back to them. So the Ranch couldn’t just be handed to them. We had to transfer it into the name of one of our untraceable companies. There are people who would have been able to trace my connections to the fellowship through my father's side if they looked hard enough.” He shrugged and my head span.

“This was all to get back at Gideon for killing his father?” My voice was high-pitched as I looked at Phillip who was thoroughly enjoying himself.

“Yes. But it was also to send a message to the Illumini. Devils Tooth Ridge was under their protection. They had been fighting for it for years. So when I married Grace and decided to settle down with her, we bought the ranch. It was the perfect disguise. I had changed my name before I met her. Wiped my entire existence clean.” He sighed as if this was all a big inconvenience.

“But there are those in the Illumini who are good at what they do and could have figured it out if they wanted to. My father was a minor member, and I hadn’t been initiated at the time. We fast-tracked my initiation. Then when Gideon tried to make himself known, we knew I had to act. If he was around long enough, one of his men or even he may have put it together.” He sat back with a look of satisfaction as Beau shifted in my arms.

“You fucking lying piece of shit,” Beau grunted and I stared at the blood.

“Let him go. He needs to get to a hospital. I’ll do anything you want if you just let him go.” I begged and Austin shook his head.

Damien raised his gun, pointing it at Beau’s head and I looked down at the man I loved, the man who had sworn to marry me.

“I love you.” He said and my vision blurred as the tears fell.

It was then that an explosion shook the building, the door to the warehouse now had a gaping, smoking hole.

Men in full body armor poured into the building, guns firing from every direction as chaos erupted.

Damien tried to grab me and I shouted, clawing at his arm when he smacked the butt of his gun into my face.

“Shut up, bitch. You are coming with me.” He snarled and I watched as his body jerked, and then his eyes went wide.

He turned and I saw Wyatt behind him, a bloodied knife in hand and eyes wild with vengeance.

“You think you can touch my woman and live?” He snarled before he stabbed him again and again, blood splattering all over him.

Damien dropped to the ground and Wyatt dropped the knife, reaching for me.

“No. take Beau. I’m okay.” I said as Wyatt hesitated for a moment then picked him up. I looked around us at the men shooting each other, searching for Austin and Phillip but I couldn’t find them.

“ANYA!” William appeared by my side, his eyes terrified as he looked at Beau.
