Dropping the tool, I edge along the side of the building to get closer. It’s risky, but I can’t help myself.

Is he with the boys or a girl? Keeley maybe?

A lick of jealousy goes through me.

“This is some fucking good shit,” Theo says.

“Damn straight,” a muffled voice replies.

Not Keeley then.

At least, I hope not.

Because the idea of her touching him, being anywhere near him, makes me murderous.

“I was a little worried there for a second, but you came through.”

“Said I would.”

I straighten, a strange sense of awareness rattling me.

It can’t be.

My mind must be playing tricks on me.

Breathe, Raine. You’re freaking out over nothing. Vaughn doesn’t know you’re here, remember.

Forcing myself to calm down, I decide to risk peeking around the corner to put to bed the silly idea that Vaughn has somehow found me.

I spot Theo first, looking every bit the entitled arrogant prick he is, as he smokes a joint. Two other boys I recognise from school stand with him, the fourth has his back to me.

Relief sinks into me.

Of course it isn’t Vaughn.

I’m losing it.

Theo has got me all twisted up in knots to the point where I’m hearing things that aren’t there.

Get a grip, Raine.

I double back to the electricity box and give myself no time to second-guess myself as I gently tug the wire free and cut it cleanly in half.

Screams and yells go up as the Chapel plummets into darkness. But there isn’t time to stick around and enjoy my victory because I need to get back to the dorm building to make sure I have an airtight alibi.

So I shove everything back in my bag, sling it over my shoulder and run.

By the time Theo turns up, I’m tucked up in bed, the bag well-hidden and my window locked.

He stands in the doorway like a furious dark prince, his face illuminated only by the strip lighting in the hall.

“How’d you do it?” His voice is a low growl.

“D-do what?” I play the sleepy victim to perfection.

“You know what the fuck I’m talking about.”
