I like getting a reaction from Theo. I want to see how far I can push him. To see what his reaction will be. Because somewhere under all the bravado and arrogance is a boy that understands me.

At least, I thought he did.

After this morning, I’m not sure anymore.

Great sex doesn’t equal a basis for a friendship let alone a relationship.

Not that I want one of those with Theo or anyone else.

But the point is the same. Maybe all we share is a fiery attraction. He’s the match and I’m the fuse, and I can’t resist the urge to see how brightly we’ll burn.

So I can only cuss myself out as I follow him out of the building after break time and around the back of the gym. I have no idea where he’s going but I don’t stop.

I can’t.

And I guess that’s the reason I’m really annoyed at myself. Because I do care.

Even when I don’t want to.

Theo ducks into a small shed, the door rattling behind him. I don’t think about it as I slip inside and after him. Until his angry gaze lands on me, sucking all the air from the small room.

“The fuck are you doing?”

“I—”

“I said”—he advances, backing me up against the wall, the air cracking and sparking between us—“the fuck are you doing?”

“You’re angry.”

“No shit.” He cuts me with an icy glare. “You need to leave.”

“No.”

“No?” His brow lifts. “Who’s the stalker now?” he snarls the words, but I’ve heard worse.

Theo doesn’t scare me. But what me being here means does.

Crap. This was a bad idea.

When I don’t reply, he adds, “If you’ve come to ask for your phone—”

“That’s not why I’m here,” I say. “Millie said something this morning and it got me thinking…”

“Millie? You’re here because of my sister?” he asks, incredulous.

“What happened yesterday, Theo?”

“No.” He steps back, putting some space between us. “You don’t get to ask that. You don’t get to fucking act like you care. And how many times have I told you. Stay the fuck away from my sister.”

“And if I do care?”

He pauses, mistrust glittering in his eyes. “What game are you playing?”

“No game.” I lift my hands in surrender. “I swear. I figured you might need to talk—”

“I don’t.”

“Well, I’m here anyway.”
