“No, don’t do that. I’ll be fine. I’ll talk to you later.”

I give the girls a small wave and hurry out of there. It’s silly, I know. But it’s too intimate, too much too soon.

I could too easily get used to it.

And that’s a huge problem. Because this isn’t my life. Here, with these people.

For a second, I think Theo might follow, but to my relief, he lets me leave.

And it isn’t until I’m outside, treading the path back to my dorm, that I realise he still didn’t give me back my phone.

So I can’t text him later.

Even if I wanted to.

When I arrive back at the Bronte Building, Millie is just heading out. “Oh, hey,” she says. “Where were you?”

“I… just with Abi.” The lie sours on my tongue. But I’m not sure Theo will want her to know about us.

Not that there is an us to know about.

It was sex.

Really great sex with some unexpected pizza thrown in.

Hardly the beginnings of a beautiful relationship.

Ha. Not that I’m capable of that. Because to be capable of that, you have to be able to trust people. Something that I’ve learned over the years is not as easy as it sounds.

“Are you okay?” she asks, eyeing Theo’s shirt. “Your neck—”

“I’m fine,” I blurt, slapping a hand over my neck.

“I’m just heading to the centre. They’re having a game night. Do you want to come?”

“I… can’t tonight.” The flash of dejection in her eyes is like a fist around my heart. But I’m a mess.

I’m not even wearing my own clothes for God’s sake.

I need to go to my room, take a long hot shower, and forget all about the last couple of hours.

“Oh, okay. Maybe another time then.”

“Definitely.” I go to move past her, but she snags my arm.

“Oh, and Raine?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

Millie stalks off, leaving me standing there in a puddle of guilt.

Shit. She knows.

Well, maybe she doesn’t know, but she suspects something.
