Thankfully, I have group straight after classes end, giving me a genuine reason to avoid Theo a little while longer.
Millie doesn’t show though, and before I know what I’m doing, I pull out my phone and text Theo.
Raine: Is Millie okay? She isn’t at group?
Theo: Yeah, she’s with me. Thought we should spend some time together… since you’re avoiding me.
Raine: I’m not, it’s just been a busy day.
Theo: You’re a terrible liar, sunshine. But I’ll let you have the rest of the night. I know I said some pretty intense things…
Raine: Do you regret saying them?
I bite down on my lip, unsure if I’m ready for his answer.
Theo: Is it going to scare you off if I say no?
Raine: Honestly, I’m not sure…
Theo: Sleep on it. We can pick this up tomorrow when I come pick you up and take you to breakfast.
Raine: Breakfast you say. I like breakfast.
Theo: Be ready for seven forty-five. I know a place.
Raine: Won’t we get into trouble leaving campus before classes?
Theo: Since when do you care about getting into a little trouble? And besides, you’ll be with an Heir. I’m untouchable, remember?
Raine: And so modest.
My lips curve.
“Okay, we’re done for the day.” Miss Linley ends the session, her gaze finding me across the circle. “Raine, a word please.”
Shit.
Guess I wasn’t being as discreet as I hoped.
Pocketing my phone, I linger while the other students leave.
“What’s up?” I ask.
“You seem distracted today. Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine.” I smile, hoping it’s genuine.
“Okay, well, if you do want to talk, I’m always here.”
“Got it. See you tomorrow.”
“Have a good evening. Stay out of trouble.”
I barely refrain from rolling my eyes.
It’s almost dark when I walk out of the centre, but I know the short walk back to the Bronte Building well enough now that it doesn’t faze me.
Except as I cut across the path leading me around the side of one of the buildings, a trickle of awareness goes through me.
