Not that I had anyone to ask. Everywhere I went, kids gave me a wide berth as if brushing past me or acknowledging me might tarnish them.

“Watch it,” a girl hisses at me as she shoulders me out of the way.

“Stupid bitch,” I murmur, rubbing my arm where her bag caught me.

“What did you say?”

The venom in her voice gives me pause. I really don’t want to do this. Not here. Not now. Not when I’m so close to getting through my first day without any drama.

All day, I’ve done what Trudy and Miss Linley asked of me. Kept my head down and my mouth shut. But I’m not about to stand by and let some stuck-up princess act like she didn’t just mow me out of the way.

“Come on, Keeley, she’s not worth it.”

“She called me a bitch.”

I turn slowly, taking the three girls in, recognising the one who shoved me as the girl draped all over Theo earlier.

Lovely.

She’s not only a bitch but a desperate whore.

I barely resist the urge to roll my eyes.

“What?” she snarls.

“You do know you walked into me, right?”

“Because you didn’t move.”

Is this girl for real?

From the way she’s glaring at me I guess she must be. Jesus.

“I’m sorry, I must have missed the sign that said this is your hallway.”

“Look, tramp.” She steps forward, getting all up in my space. I’m vaguely aware we’re drawing a crowd, a low ripple of chatter going up around us as more and more students stop to see what’s happening. “I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to let you enrol but you don’t belong here.”

“Hardly something to cry about,” I scoff.

Her teeth grind as she looks for a dent in my armour. But the thing is, I’ve survived a lot worse than some mean girl who wants to put me in my place.

“Keeley, come on—”

“You should listen to your friend,Keeley,” I drawl her name, taunting her. “Walk away before you start something you won’t finish.”

Her cheeks flame. “Is that a threat?”

“More like a promise.”

“Who the hell do you think you are? You can’t talk to me like that.”

“Run along now, princess.” I smirk, going to walk away but the crazy fucking bitch grabs my bag and yanks. Hard. “What the hell?”

My arm shoots out, my elbow connecting her chest.

“Ow, you psycho. You hit me. She hit me,” she starts screaming like a banshee as I try to wrestle free from her hold.

“Let me go then, stupid—”
