His grip on me is ironclad as he mutters to himself. I don’t know what he’s saying but he sounds unhinged, only confirming my fears. He’s either high or experiencing some kind of mental breakdown.

Either way, it’s not a good sign.

Not when he’s already so pissed at me.

I spot a car up ahead. His car. And the fear multiplies.

This is it.

The end of the road.

If I let him force me inside his car, who knows where I’ll end up.

Nowhere good, I silence the little voice. Refusing to accept that I came all this way just to end up right back at square one.

Blood roars in my ears, my pulse a wild thing in my chest. “Where are you taking me?”

He doesn’t answer, just rips the door open and shoves me inside. My head smacks off the centre dash and I groan, slipping further under.

I’m aware of a door slamming, the car rocking beneath me. My heavy eyelids try and open so I can look out of the window but pain sears me to the bone.

God, that hurt.

I can barely open my eyes, everything drifting away as I fight to stay conscious.

“Raine,” I hear someone yell. “RAINE?”

“Th-Theo?” I murmur, certain I’m hearing things.

Maybe I’m dreaming and he’s here to rescue me. To take me back to All Hallows’ and never let me go.

But the door opens and my fantasy bursts. Of course, Theo isn’t here.

I barely make out Vaughn getting in, his form shimmering like a mirage. “Fucking prick…” he mutters, firing up the car and revving the engine.

Something slams into the back of us, and I try to glance over my shoulder but he presses the accelerator and the car takes off.

“What’s go—”

“Shut the fuck up,” he barks, shoving me back into the seat. “This is all your fault. Stupid fucking bitch.”

My focus slowly returns, and I notice him checking the rear-view mirror. Twisting around I gasp when I spot Elliot’s car tailing us.

He came.

Theo came.

I can’t order my thoughts quick enough before Vaughn barks, “Did you warn him, huh? Did you—”

“N-no, no I didn’t, I swear.”

Theo isn’t supposed to be here.

He isn’t supposed—

Vaughn floors the gas and the car takes off like a rocket.

“You’re going to kill us,” I shriek, holding on for dear life. But he doesn’t hear me, lost in his anger, his warped sense of reality.
