I had no idea how much I needed her.

RAINE

My eyelids flutter open, pain swarming every inch of my body.

God, it hurts.

The dim lighting makes it easier on my eyes. My lips part to speak, to say something but my throat is dry and scratchy and nothing but a weak croak comes out.

“Raine? Fuck, sunshine, are you okay?” Theo grabs my hand, his touch startling me.

I meet his concerned gaze, confusion swimming in my head.

What happened?

Where am I?

Why is he here?

“Can you speak?” he asks.

“W-water,” I manage to get out.

“Shit, yeah, of course.” He scrambles out of the chair and pours me a cup of water. “Want me to sit you up a little?”

I nod, and he uses the remote to raise the back of my bed. The sudden movement jolts me, sending a fresh wave of pain through me and I gasp.

“Do you need a nurse?”

“N-no. Not yet,” I whisper, taking the cup of water from him.

“You have no idea how good it is to see your eyes.”

I don’t know what to say to that.

He’s here…

And I’m—

“Vaughn, is he here?”

Theo’s whole demeanour changes, his expression darkening. “Raine, I—”

The door opens and Millie sticks her head inside. “Is she— Raine.” Tears pool in her eyes. “You’re awake. Thank God, you’re—”

“Mills,” Theo warns but I wave him off.

“It’s okay.”

I beckon her over and she takes up position on the opposite side of the bed to her brother.

“Are you okay?”

“I… I don’t know,” I admit.

I can hardly remember what happened, pieces of it flashing through my mind.
