Leaving Theo. Going to the hotel. Stanley Harris. Running. Vaughn. A car chase… tyres screeching, metal grating… Pain, so much pain.

“Raine?” Millie’s voice pulls me from the distorted memories. “You’re okay now,” she says softly. “You’re going to be okay.”

“I… I don’t understand.”

“What do you mean?” Millie frowns.

“Why are you here?”

“Because we care about you. Because Theo lo—”

“Why don’t you go and let the nurse know she’s awake,” he suggests.

“Fine. But I’m coming straight back. You can’t keep her all to yourself, Theo. I care too.”

“I know you do, Mills.”

Millie leaves and the air turns thick. Theo watches me, and a trickle of unease goes through me.

“You left,” he says quietly.

“I did.”

The silence stretches on between us. I can sense he wants to ask me more questions, but I appreciate his restraint. I’m not ready to talk. I still can’t get over the fact he’s here.

He’s not supposed to be here.

I glance away, too overwhelmed at the intensity in his eyes. All the things he’s saying without uttering a word.

“Raine, I—”

The door bursts open and a nurse comes inside. “Raine, sweetheart, how are we feeling?”

“Everything hurts.”

“That’s to be expected. You’re one tough cookie.”

“I don’t feel very tough.” I rub my head, wincing at the scratch of the IV disappearing into the back of my hand.

“Well, your boyfriend here hasn’t left your side since we brought you up to your room.” She gives Theo a bright smile, but it does little to tamp down some of the tension radiating off him.

Boyfriend.

He told them he’s myboyfriend?

“I had to tell them something to get the paramedics to let me ride in with you,” he explains.

I guess that makes sense.

But I still don’t understand why he’s here.

Why he cares at all after what I did.

The nurse checks my SATS and makes a note on my chart before dropping it back in its holster. “The doctor will be around shortly. If you need more pain relief just shout, okay?”

“Thank you.”

“You’re in good hands, Raine.” She gives me a warm smile before her gaze flicks to Theo.
