Icy cold dread goes through me.

Theo knows.

He knows the deepest darkest corners of my soul. The things I did. The thing I let Vaughn do…

God.

“It doesn’t matter, Raine.” She squeezes my hand again. “All that matters is that you’re here and you’re safe now.”

I wish I could believe her.

But once this gets out. Once everyone finds out… Theo won’t want to be anywhere near me.

“I wish you could see how much my brother—”

The door opens and he appears. He looks as bad as I feel. Hair dishevelled and dark rings circling his eyes.

“I’ll give the two of you some space.” Millie gets up and lets go of my hand. I want to tell her to stay. To beg her not to leave me alone with him. But the words get stuck because Theo’s looking at me and I can’t breathe.

I can’t…

“How are you feeling?” He comes to the side of the bed.

“Like I barely survived the end of the world.”

Something flashes in his eyes, but he shoves it away. “Fuck, sunshine. You really had me scared there for a minute.”

“I… I’m sorry.”

The unspoken words hang between us.

“You left me.” Hurt coats his voice. “You ran.”

“I had no choice.”

“There’s always a choice, Raine.”

“Not in my world.”

Silence hangs between us. Thick and heavy. I don’t know what to say to fix this. I ran and he wasn’t supposed to come after me.

“You stole money from me.”

“I did.” Shame crushes my chest as I glance away, breaking the tether between us.

I’d taken the stash in his bottom drawer. “I needed a way to put as much space between me and—”

I can’t say his name.

I won’t.

“You could have told me.”

The words land like a blow to my chest.

How?

How could I ever tell him the truth?
