“We both know I couldn’t,” I say.

“Because you think I care about where you came from, what you survived?”

My eyes lift to his, the emotion I see in his expression sucking the air clean from my lungs. “Don’t you?”

“Fuck, sunshine, when I realised you’d left… I didn’t handle it well.” He drags a hand down his face, exhaling a steady breath.

“I’m sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. But I couldn’t stay, I couldn’t—” The words die on my tongue as my eyelashes flutter.

Everything hurts.

My body. My head… My heart.

So much pain and betrayal.

“It doesn’t matter.” Theo takes my hand in his. “I’ve never felt this way before Raine, and I wasn’t lying when I said you were mine.”

“Theo,” I sigh. “The things I’ve done… the things I’ve let—”

“I. Don’t. Care.” He leans in, forcing himself into my space. “Seeing the truck hit you, knowing I might lose you… I never want to experience that again. It’s you and me sunshine, you and me against the world.”

If only it was that easy.

I manage a weak smile, unsure of what else to say.

He’s saying all the right things, but our relationship won’t weather this storm.

My history.

He thinks it doesn’t matter now, but it will.

It will eat away at him, driving a wedge between us, deeper and deeper.

Theo is destined for greatness. A life of the rich and privileged. I’ll be nothing more than his dirty little secret.

People will always wonder why he chose me. What I did to trap him.

I don’t want that for him.

I don’t want that for me.

“Tell me what you’re thinking,” he whispers, brushing his thumb over the back of my hand.

“I…” My voice fails me.

Where do I even begin?

“I want you to come home with me. When you’re better and they let you out of here, I want—”

“Theo, we need to talk about this. About us. I’m not sure—”

“No, sunshine. No.” A flash of irritation passes over him, but he composes himself.

“I need you to hear me, right now, okay.” He grips my hand tighter, staring at me with wonder. “I love you, Raine Storm,” he says with a possessive edge that sends a shiver down my spine.

“I fucking love you and I’m not letting you go ever again.”
