“Ready?” I ask once we’re both dressed as I have my fingers wrapped around the door handle.

She nods once, but there’s hesitation in her eyes.

“Me and you, sunshine. We’ve got this.”

With her tucked into my side, we make our way downstairs. The second we turn the corner we find six shocked faces staring back at us.

They all quickly recover, not wanting to make a big deal about her appearance, which I’m grateful for.

I’m about to explain the reason for this turnaround but she beats me to it.

“Vaughn is dead. It’s over,” she says, her voice rough with emotion. “We’re going to get takeaway.”

“So do us a favour and make yourselves scarce when we get back,” I tell them as they continue watching us closely before guiding her toward the front door. “I plan on giving my girl the best date of her life.”

RAINE

“What?” I ask Theo as he stares at me.

“You fucking amaze me,” he grins, cutting the engine.

The car smells amazing and I can’t wait to get inside and tuck into our gourmet burgers and hand cut fries. But he makes no move to get out of the car, and if I’m being honest, I’m in no rush either.

“Our food is going to get cold,” I point out.

Yet, we still both sit here.

I get it though. The significance of this moment—I didn’t think I’d get to this point either.

Not while Vaughn was still alive.

Hearing he was gone was like a weight instantly lifted.

He has no power over me anymore, and I get to decide who I want to be and how I want to live my life.

I finally get to leave my past behind.

“Come on, sunshine. I promised you the date to end all dates.” Theo shoulders his door and climbs out, coming around to open mine.

We walk to the Chapel hand in hand. My ribs still smart a little and some bruises feel more tender than others, but I know they’ll heal.

Laughter drifts out of the building and Theo rolls his eyes. “Should have known they wouldn’t listen to a fucking word I said,” he mutters.

“I know you wanted it to be a date but how about we spend some time with them?”

“Yeah?” His eyes light up.

“Yeah.” I nod. “Although I’m not sharing my food with them.”

“They can order in.” He shrugs, his eyes dropping to my mouth.

“Theo,” I breathe, desire pulsing inside me.

“What, sunshine?” He advances toward me, backing me up against the wall.

My breath catches as one of his hands rests on the wall beside my head. “The food…”
