Mr. Porter has reassured Trudy and Miss Linley—and Theo since he demanded to be in that awkward meeting—that any issues will be swiftly dealt with, but I know how vicious the Heir chasers can be.

Especially Keeley Davis and her mean girlfriends.

A loud knock on my door pulls me from my thoughts.

Much to Theo’s disapproval, I slept in my dorm room last night. I couldn’t really explain it, but I needed some time alone to get my head around everything. I get to have the life I never believed would be mine.

It’s going to take a little getting used to.

“Raine, open up.” Millie’s voice filters through the door.

I open it, and frown. “Hi, what’s up?”

“I need to talk to you.” She barges inside and closes the door behind her.

“I’m freaking out.”

“What, why?”

“Because Marcus asked me to hang out with him next weekend and I don’t know what to say.”

“Hold up.” I shake my head. “First of all, who the hell is Marcus? And second of all, why am I only hearing about this now?”

“He’s a boy in my class. And you’ve been kind of preoccupied.” She rolls her eyes like it’s obvious.

“You can always talk to me Mills.”

“I am talking to you, duh.”

“So Marcus… does Theo know—”

“No.” She flushed. “And don’t you dare say a word to him. I mean it, Raine. I only have you to talk to about this stuff.”

“Okay, we won’t tell Theo… yet.”

“Ever,” she murmurs. “It’s a miracle anyone even wants to talk to me thanks to my overbearing arsehole of a brother.”

“You love him really.”

“Yeah, but that’s not the point.”

“So what is the point?”

“I… I like him, okay? He’s smart and funny and he doesn’t think I’m a freak show just because I attend group therapy. He gets me,” she says with a half-smile.

“He sounds nice.”

“He is.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“Have you met my brother?” she shrieks. “Once he finds out, he’ll ruin everything.”

“No, he won’t. I won’t let him.”

“And how do you plan on doing that?”

I can think of a few ways, but none are suitable for Millie’s ears.
