And he’s going to hate me more than anything when the truth comes out. But I don’t know how else to protect him.

I don’t—

I force the thoughts out of my head, inhaling a deep, calming breath.

Vaughn won’t stop until he gets what he wants. He won’t stop until he ruins everything I care about.

But if I follow his instructions, if I do as he says, maybe I can limit the fallout.

“Don’t know what he possibly sees in her, she’s… trash.”

I glance over my shoulder, pinning the two girls with a hard look. One cowers, but the other holds her ground. Glaring at me with utter disdain.

Flashing her a bright smile, I whisper, “Did you say something?”

“I…” Her eyes dart past me to the front of the classroom. “N-no.”

“Didn’t think so,” I mutter.

Thankfully, the bell rings not long after that, and I’m first up and out of my seat. Only to walk straight into Tally.

“Hey,” she says.

“Uh, hi. Are you waiting for me?”

“Yes. We need to talk.”

“We do?” I frown.

“I heard about what happened this morning in the cafeteria.” She laces her arms through mine as we walk down the corridor. “I can’t believe Theo claimed you like that.”

Tell me about it, I trap the words behind my lips.

“The sixth form is rife with rumours,” she adds.

“Lovely.” I grimace.

“I already gave Keeley and her little bitch brigade a mouthful earlier.”

“You did?”

“Of course. You’re one of us now.” She offers me a conspiratorial smile. “We’ve got to stick together.” She leads me toward the cafeteria, and my stomach grumbles as if on cue. “You good sitting with us?” she asks, and I appreciate the choice.

Theo wouldmakeme sit with them.

My lips twitch, and I’m surprised how easy it is to fall into the trap of forgetting that everything between us is a lie now.

The second he spots me across the room, his eyes darken, running over my body, sending a shiver down my spine.

Okay, so maybe not everything is a lie.

“God, he looks at you like he wants to devour you.”

“He’s very… intense.”

“They all are.” Tally releases me as we reach their table, and Theo gets up, coming to me.

“Hi.” He gazes down at me, the air crackling between us.
