“Sunshine, I’m an Heir. It’s what we do best.” He steals a kiss and steals my heart right along with it.

Damn him.

I don’t want to feed into this fantasy but it’s hard not to.

“Don’t look so pissed, Eaton,” Reese chuckles. “You know Abi would be—”

“Don’t,” he grits out and I glance over at him.

Oh yeah, big bad Elliot Eaton has it bad. And the object of his desire just walked into the cafeteria.

“Oh look, Red is here,” Oakley teases.

“Seriously, can you not?” Elliot hisses.

“Hi guys.” Abi smiles, lingering on Elliot a little too long. He pushes a chair out with his foot, and she drops into it. “I’m so tired.”

Abi folds her arms on the desk and lays her head there.

“Uh, everything okay, Abs?” Tally asks.

“Long night.”

“Long night doing what exactly?” Reese jokes.

“My dad… bad night.”

“Do you need anything?” Elliot says.

“I’ll be okay.” She turns her head to the side, looking at him. “But thanks.”

He doesn’t reply, but he doesn’t take his eyes off her either.

“You’re coming to the party still, right?” Tally offers her a sympathetic smile.

“I don’t know. Maybe. He’s not had a good week.”

“You’ve got to be there, Red,” Oakley adds. “If you don’t come, our fearless leader will be all alone now Theo is wifed up.”

Theo tenses but he doesn’t deny it.

Another stab of guilt goes through me.

The boys spend the rest of lunch giving each other shit while the girls discuss dress options. But I can barely focus on what they’re saying.

“Hey, you okay?” Theo asks me, his lips brushing the side of my neck.

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You’re unusually quiet. If it’s about the Elliot thing—”

“It’s not.”

“Good because I have the money and it’s partly my fault anyway.”

God, why does he have to be like this?

Why can’t he be more like the Theo I met when I first arrived here?
