“No wonder Theo has kept you away from this place,” Raine laughs, pulling the door open and gesturing for Millie to go first. “I bet you’ll have Elliot making those pancakes for you within the hour.”

She giggles as she goes, and I can’t help but smile at the sound of her joy.

“Raine,” I call my girl before she disappears from my sight.

She pauses and looks over her shoulder, her eyes locking on mine.

“Thank you,” I say, my sincerity clear in my tone.

Slowly, her smile grows. It’s not as fast as I’d like but I’m aware that she still has a lot of questions about all of this.

“Take your time,” she says after a few seconds. “I’ll make sure Millie doesn’t cause too much trouble.”

“Sure you will,” I call with a laugh as she finally slips down the hall. I think we both know that if there’s trouble to be had, Raine will be the first one to find it.

RAINE

“Who knew he could cook.” My gaze flicks to Elliot who glowers at me as I lower my knife and fork.

“Oh, Eaton is full of surprises, isn’t that right?” Reese grins, and Elliot shakes his head. “Good, Mills?”

“So freaking good.” She rubs her stomach. “But I think I ate too much.”

“You want anything else?” Theo asks her.

He’s sat between us, his arm around the back of my chair, fingers toying with my hair. There’s an energy between us, lingering from last night. But I’m not sure we’ll get any time alone now that Millie is here.

And maybe it’s better that way.

“What will happen?” Millie asks, and everyone goes quiet. “To the house? Where will I stay? Will we have to live together?”

Theo runs a hand down his face, and I slip my hand under the table to squeeze his knee.

“You don’t have to go back to the house,” he says. “Not if you don’t want to.”

“I can stay here?”

“For a few nights. Until things calm down. Then you’ll have your room in the dorms, and we’ll figure out what to do with the house.”

“Can we get our own place?” Her face lights up at the idea.

“I… we’ll figure it out. This is all new to me too, Mills.”

“I know.”

He ruffles her hair. “Why don’t you finish up here and go get a shower. Then we’ll do whatever you to.”

“Can I go to the party tonight?”

“No,” Theo says at the same time as Elliot says, “We’ll see.”

“The fuck?” Theo barks at him.

“She’s here now. You can’t lock her up in your room.”

“Watch me. She’s twelve, asshole.”
