“Did Theo ask you to wait for me?”
“Nope. I was just heading to school.”
I don’t believe her, but I don’t argue.
“So you and my brother… I didn’t see that coming at all.” She grins.
“Millie…”
“Oh, come on. I found you in my bed and—”
“Please, stop.”
“What, why? I thought…” Her brows furrow as she studies me. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
“Nothing.” I force a smile. “I’m just tired.”
“Did Theo sneak over? Because he didn’t say—”
“No, I didn’t sleep well is all.”
“Oh. Are you sure you’re okay? Because he did mention that you were avoiding him.”
“It’s… complicated and I really don’t feel like talking with you about it.”
“Just because I’m only twelve doesn’t mean—”
“It has nothing to do with your age, Millie.” A frustrated sigh rolls through me. “But what’s between me and your brother is between me and your brother.”
Her expression falls flat, and I feel like a total bitch. But I can’t drag her into this anymore than I already have.
Especially not now that Vaughn is here.
I glance around, half expecting to see him hiding in the tree line.
I barely feel even a lick of relief when he isn’t. Because he’s out there somewhere. Watching.
Waiting.
“I really need to get to class,” I say.
“You mean you need to get away from me.”
“Millie, that’s not—”
“Yeah, whatever Raine. I guess I’ll see you around.” She takes off toward the main building, and I let out a heavy sigh.
This is going to be harder than I thought.
But I don’t know what to do.
I manage to get into the sixth form building without anyone spotting me. But when I turn the corner and head down the corridor, Theo lifts his head, dark circles under his eyes.
Everything slows down around me until I can hear nothing but the blood racing in my ears. I knew I’d have to see him eventually, but I didn’t know I’d feel so… so desperate.
“Hi.” He pushes off the wall and approaches me.
“Hi.”
