“Millie, said—”

“Making your little sister spy on me, that’s a bit weird, even for you, Ashworth.”

“Yeah, well, desperate times call for desperate measures.” He advances and I retreat backward until my bag collides with the wall and I have nowhere else to go. “You’re avoiding me.” He looms over me, his eyes simmering with hurt. “Listen, the stuff I said—”

“Theo, can we not do this now. I have class.”

“Afraid that’s not going to work for me, sunshine.” He lowers his head a little, carving out a private little bubble as the last few stragglers hurry to class.

I feel their stares, their curiosity. But Theo doesn’t seem to care that he’s basically got me pinned to the wall in public.

“Theo,” his name is a soft desperate plea.

I don’t want to do this.

I don’t want to see the disdain in his eyes when he discovers the kind of girl I really am.

Because the truth is, I have fallen for him. This arrogant, entitled, gorgeous boy has stolen my heart even though I swore to myself I wouldn’t give it to him.

“Let’s go somewhere, right now. Just you and me.” He brushes his knuckles down my cheek. “I missed you yesterday.”

“I… we can’t.” My heart crashes against my chest.

“I came on a little strong, I get that. But it doesn’t change anything. It’s still just you and me, sunshine.”

Oh, Theo.

It changes everything.

And even if it didn’t, nothing will be the same now Vaughn is here.

Emotion rushes up my throat and I swallow it down.

“What’s wrong?” Concern etches into his expression. “Raine? You’re starting to freak me out a little.”

“I… I can’t—” The words get stuck.

Theo’s brows draw tighter as he glances down the hall before grabbing my hand. “Come on,” he says, dragging me into an empty classroom. He engages the lock and stalks toward me. I drop onto the edge of a desk, craning my neck to look at him.

“Tell me we’re okay,” he says. “Because you look like a cornered animal about to dart.”

“You know it isn’t that straightforward, Theo.”

“Because you’re leaving.”

“I… yeah.”

God why do the words hurt so much.

That was the plan.

Turn eighteen then leave.

“Fuck that. We have something, you can’t tell me you don’t feel it.”

“You know I do,” I admit quietly, unable to look at him.

He slides his fingers under my jaw and lifts my face. “Raine, don’t shut me out. I’m fucking begging you. I know I’m a lot to handle—”
