A knock at the door startles me and I call out, “Who is it?”

“It’s me.” The crack in Theo’s voice sends my heart into overdrive.

I knew he would come eventually but I’m not ready.

I don’t think I’ll ever be ready.

But then, something strikes me as odd. Usually, Theo would let himself in. But he knocked.

On shaky legs, I get up and go to the door, opening it.

“Fuck. sunshine,” he rasps.

“You look like shit,” I remark, wanting nothing more than to wrap him into my arms and make it all better.

But I don’t.

I can’t.

“I may have gone a little too hard last night. Can I come in?”

“Since when do you ask for permission?” My brow lifts as I step aside, granting him entrance.

“Since I woke up and you were gone.”

“It’s taken all day for you to decide to come over here?”

“It’s taken me all day to drag my arse off the bed. I don’t know what the fuck Vaughn put in those pills, but it was some good fucking shit.” A faint smile traces his lips but I’m not smiling.

In fact, I feel sick.

“I missed you this morning,” he admits. “Why did you leave?”

“I…” My gaze drops to the floor.

“You disappeared last night too.” There’s an edge in his tone. “Where did you go?”

“I hung out with Millie.”

“Hey, look at me.” He’s in front of me in a second, sliding his fingers under my chin and tipping my face up. “What’s going on?”

“N-nothing. I’m just tired and I have a ton of homework to do.”

“Don’t fucking lie to me.” His eyes darken. “I needed you last night and you… you weren’t there.”

“You didn’t need me, Theo.” I gave him a small, sad smile.

“You’re pissed at me for cutting loose and having some fun, after everything…”

“I’m not pissed at you. I just didn’t want to be around you when you were out of control.”

“Come on, sunshine. I wasn’t out of control. I was having fun. I was celebrating.” His fingers slide into my belt loops, tugging me closer. “I wanted to celebrate… with you.”

“Pretty sure you wouldn’t have even recognised me by the end of the night.”

“Not possible.” He grabs the back of my neck and pulls me even closer, burying his face in my shoulder. “Fuck, I missed you.”

I go deathly still, trying to keep the tears threatening to fall at bay.
