With those words ringing in my ears, I take off, cutting back through the trees to the Chapel. I don’t bother trying to run, everything I’m wearing is too wet and caked in mud for that.

Instead, I strip off at the front door and storm through my house in my sopping-wet boxers.

“What the fuck happened to you?” Oak and Theo ask as I pass them.

“Fuck off,” I grunt viciously enough to stop them from following me.

The second I slam my bedroom door behind me, I realise my mistake.I shouldn’t have come back here. All I can smell, all I can see, and taste is her.

She’s on my bed, her limbs twisted up in my sheets. Her thighs pinning my head as I?—

“FUCK,” I roar, focusing on my bathroom.

The second I’m inside, I turn the shower on as hot as it’ll go, shed my soaked underwear and step under the stream of near-boiling water.

My skin instantly prickles but despite the burn, I don’t move. Instead, I embrace the pain.

Sucking in a deep breath, I hold it for a beat before releasing it. I repeat over and over in the hope of talking myself down.

By the time I turn the scalding water off, I’ve successfully washed the mud down the drain but that’s about all I’ve achieved.

Reese’s words float around in my head as I drop into the chair in front of my desk and attempt to get some studying done. But every time I try to work, my mind drifts back to the few moments I stole with Abigail last night.

Just for those ten minutes, everything was so perfect.

Everything felt so right.

The chaos inside me settled.

For ten minutes, I felt… I felt like I was where I was meant to be.

“How about you go and talk to her.”

My eyes drift to the window and I gaze out in the direction of the Bronte Building.

Is she there in her room alone? Or is she with him?

Is he giving her everything I want to give her?

I squeeze my eyes closed as the image of them doing exactly what we did last night. His blond hair instead of mine between her thighs as he?—

The crash of my chair hitting the floor startles me as I surge to my feet.

I’ve pulled a hoodie on and shoved my feet into my trainers before I know what I’m doing.

It’s not until I pull the door open, and the bright lights of the hallway burn my eyes that I realise I was sitting in the dark.

Voices float up to me as I descend the stairs, but I ignore all of them as I rush toward the front door.

“Elliot, where the fuck are you going?” Oakley shouts, but I don’t bother responding.

“Leave him,” Reese says just before the front door swings closed behind me.

Stars twinkle in the inky night sky as I make my way toward the girls’ dorm building.

All I want to do is see if she’s there. See if she’s alone.

But by the time I get to her door room and pull the master key from my pocket, I know that there’s no way I’m going to be able to slip in and out unnoticed like I have so many times before.
