Maybe not ever.

“What do you fancy?” he asks me, nudging me toward a table.

“I can get my own?—”

“Relax, I’ve got it.”

“Fine. I’ll have a cup of tea and a toasted bagel, please.”

“Butter? Cream cheese? Jam?”

“Just butter, thank you.”

“Sit. I’ll be right back.”

Ethan strolls off like the two of us having breakfast is the most normal thing in the world, and I can’t help but think maybe I had him all wrong in the beginning. Because he has been a good friend to me, when I’ve let him be, at least.

And in a strange way, it’s nice to have a friend outside of the Heirs and their inner circle.

A few minutes later, he returns with what looks to be more than a toasted bagel and tea.

I arch a brow and he chuckles. “Okay, so here me out. I know you said to get a bagel, but the egg and spinach muffin looked so good, and it’s blueberry muffin Monday so I grabbed one of those too.”

“Ethan, I’ll never eat all of this.” I barely have my appetite back as it is.

Although he’s right, it does look good.

“It’s all good. Whatever you don’t eat, I will.”

“This is really nice of you,” I say as he sits down.

“What can I say, I’m a nice guy?”

Familiar laughter draws my attention and I watch as the girls enter the cafeteria.

“Abs, you’re—” Tally draws up short, flicking her gaze to my table mate. “Having a breakfast date with Ethan Smith.”

“Oh no, it isn’t a date. That’s not… I mean, we’re not?—”

“Relax, Bancroft. Tallulah is just messing with you.”

“I knew the two of you were hanging out, but this is weird. It’s weird, right?” She glances to Liv and Raine for back up.

“It’s just breakfast.” Liv shrugs. “I’m just happy she’s eating something.” Shame burns my cheeks, and she lets out a soft sigh. “Abs, I didn’t mean?—”

“It’s fine.”

“Can we join you?” Raine asks.

“Sure, have at it. I actually need to go anyway.”

“What? Why?” I gawk at Ethan.

We literally just got here, and he wants to leave already?

“Your friends are here now.” He winks and gets up, grabbing his egg muffin and the blueberry muffin. “See you in class.”

He walks out without so much as a backward glance and I stare after him.
