“What was all that about?” Tally nudges my arm.

“Honestly,” I murmur, staring at the door. “I have no idea.”

ABIGAIL

Ididn’t see Elliot all day at school yesterday and he didn’t come by last night.

If I didn’t trust him not to hurt me again, I’d wonder if yesterday was a dream.

Some vivid fantasy my weary mind created to help me escape the grief-filled void.

There’s been nothing except a couple of vague texts to say he’s dealing with family stuff.

I hope he’s okay. There’s something sinister about the Eaton family. Something he’s reluctant to tell me. But I’m not so naïve that I don’t have my suspicions. I just hope I’m wrong.

Because I can’t imagine anyone hurting Elliot. He’s so big and strong and formidable.

A force to reckoned with.

“Abi?” Tally approaches and I blink up at her.

“Hi.” I give her a weak smile.

“What are you doing?”

“Just… sitting.”

“I can see that. Are you waiting for someone?”

“Just enjoying some fresh air,” I lie.

From the bench outside sixth form, I can see the rugby field and the Chapel in the distance.

It seems silly now to be sitting here. But I guess part of me was hoping to catch a glimpse of Elliot. To know that, even if he hasn’t been in touch much, he’s okay.

“What’s going on with you?” She sits beside me.

“Nothing, I’m just?—”

“Abigail, you are many things. But a good liar you are not. Is this about Ethan?”

“Ethan? God, no. Why would you even say that.”

“Oh, I don’t know.” Her lips twist with amusement. “You two seemed pretty cosy yesterday morning.”

“It really isn’t like that.”

“Because you’re still hung up on Elliot?” I press my lips together and she releases a weary sigh. “What happened between the two of you, Abs? Really?”

I could lie or I could tell her the truth.

Now that Elliot has admitted he does feel the same, it doesn’t seem so important anymore to keep the kiss to myself.

“I kissed him. At the party, the night I found out my father died.”

“Oh, babe. I’m so sorry. I knew something had happened, I just didn’t think… You kissed him?” I nod and she grimaces. “Oh, Abs. I didn’t ever think you’d actually go for it. I take it he didn’t respond the way you hoped?”
