More demanding.

I don’t know how I know it isn’t Tally or Liv or Raine standing on the other side of the door, I just do.

“Come on, Red. I know you’re in there, open up.”

My heart ratchets.

Elliot’s here.

He’s here.

Any other time, I might have felt a trickle of excitement at the knowledge he came to see me. But I only feel the heat of embarrassment staining my cheeks.

He knocks again, and I remain deathly still, listening. Waiting to see what he will do.

Another knock, and he mutters something inaudible before leaving, his heavy footsteps growing quieter and quieter.

He came.

Confusion wars inside me. He made it clear he doesn’t feel the same about me when I kissed him. So surely he’d want to keep his distance.

The girls probably insisted he come check on me. I’ll have to tell them not to do that again.

I don’t need Elliot’s pity.

I don’t need anything from him.

As if on cue, my phone bleeps and I grab it off my desk, scanning the text.

Tally: He just wanted to see how you were.

Abigail: I don’t need a babysitter, Tally.

Tally: Abs, come on. We’re worried.

Abigail: I just need time.

Tally: Yeah, I know. You know where I am if you need me.

Abigail: Thanks.

Getting back into bed, I clutch the covers to my chest and stare up at the ceiling.

Maybe I should have let Elliot in. But seeing him again, after everything… it would only serve to remind me of that night.

I can vividly remember answering Maureen’s call, crumpling to my knees as her words hit. Elliot’s strong arms around me, the concern in his eyes as tried to figure out what was wrong.

Why?

Of all the boys in All Hallows’ for me to develop feelings for, it had to be Elliot Eaton.

Leader of the Heirs.

One of the most untouchable and formidable students in the sixth form.

What the hell was I thinking?

Except, I wasn’t thinking.
