“Why?” He flips the question on me.

“Why?” Maniacal laughter spills from my lips as I clamber to my feet. “Because it’s the only thing that helps. It’s the only thing that gives me any semblance of relief.”

“What, lover boy not doing it for you?” The sneer on his face makes me see red.

“Oh, you’d like that wouldn’t you.” I push into his space. “You’d like to hear all about how Ethan made me forget all my problems. How he fucked them right out of me. Would that make you feel better?” I shriek. “Would that appease your guilt? To know that I’ve moved on? That I don’t want you anymore? Because I wish it was that simple, Elliot.

“I wish I could just forget all about you. But how the hell am I supposed to do that if you’re watching me from the shadows? How am I?—”

“Enough,” he commands, and I submit.

The air is so thick around us now, I can hardly breathe.

Elliot’s eyes burn into me, his presence taking up every inch of space. He’s larger than life. A cold mask of fury as she glared down at me. But he’s beautiful too.

Those dark intense eyes, his sharp angled jaw, and prominent nose. It isn’t any wonder every girl in All Hallows’ wants a piece of him.

The last Heir standing.

He slowly reaches for me, but I counter his touch, knocking his hand away.

“Don’t.”

“Abi…”

“No, Elliot. You don’t get to do that. You don’t get to care. Not after you went on a date with Lauren Winrow.”

His brows bunch, confusion flitting across his expression. “You know about that?”

“Everyone knows!”

“It’s not what it looks like,” he says quietly.

“I don’t care. But I can’t do this. I don’t know why you’re watching me, sneaking into my room at night, checking up on me in class… but it has to stop. It’s confusing and it isn’t fair. You made your choice.”

And it wasn’t me.I swallow the words, refusing to give them life.

“You think I chose—” He stops himself, reaching for me again. “Lauren isn’t important. You are. And I need you to stop hurting yourself, Red.”

“Why?” My voice cracks, my entire body trembling.

There’s something about the way he watches me. Something different.

“Because despite what you think, I care, Abi. I fucking care, okay. But it doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t…” He trails off, not giving me the rest of his words.

A fresh wave of frustration bubbles inside of me. Because I don’t understand. Not really.

All I know is I feel so hopeless, so lost and alone. And Elliot is standing here looking at me like I’m precious. Like he cares. Like he wants to fix this.

Fix me.

If I didn’t know better, I’d go as far as to say he’s looking at me like I’m his.

ELLIOT

My heart races as I stare at her.
