Her laugh was short but sweet. “I like that about you. This incessant need to have me, yet when you got the chance, you didn’t rush—you savored. I appreciate that.”

“Admittedly, I like everything about you.”

“Oh yeah? Like what?”

I moved to the window in my bedroom, staring out at the street below, wondering if she was doing the same, or if she was pacing her room, playing with her long, dark hair, if there was a heat moving through that gorgeous body of hers. “I like that we both have small tattoos that mean everything to us. I like that we both love to travel, and we’re obviously dedicated to our careers because we’re balancing school at the same time. I like the way your teeth bite into your lip right before you’re going to come. I like that your scream goes a little high-pitched before you drag it out for multiple syllables. I like that I now know what your hand feels like when it’s locked in mine.”

“You’re fascinating.”

I rubbed my fingers across my lip, back and forth. “Tell me something that no one knows about you.”

“Something no one knows,” she repeated. “You mean sexually? Life-wise? Career-wise?”

“Anything.”

“Well ...” She turned quiet. “Aside from the physical satisfaction I hoped to gain from this app, taking my mind away from the place it’s currently in—giving me some mental freedom, if you will—I’m also interested in studying the way you guys think. The mind of a man is something I’m completely intrigued by.”

“How so?”

“Our sexes are so opposite. To me, that’s completely captivating.”

I pushed my back against the window. “You must be a psy major?”

She laughed.

“I need more details,” I told her.

“Well, for starters, I think most men can have uncommitted sex and immediately move on to the next woman without any feelings getting involved. It could be the most amazing, intense, bonding experience ever, and they can move on without so much as a second thought. Not women. Most of us would want to duplicate that night over and over.”

“You’re forgetting something.”

“What’s that?”

“I asked for a second shot.”

“I’m not forgetting. I’m trying to figure out why.” There was movement in the background, the sound of her breathing coming through the speaker until she seemed to get settled. “What is it that makes me different than the last woman you slept with—which, I assume, was a one-night stand, no?” She paused to see if I’d contradict her. “That’s what I thought.”

Man, she was cute.

“She was, yes,” I admitted. “But she didn’t have this mesmerizing quality that you have. How every time you unravel a new piece about yourself, I want to dig deeper. I want to see what’s underneath it. Like what wrist you had tattooed, which I didn’t have a chance to check when I was with you, whose initials were inked, and why that person means so much to you. Before you left me in the stairwell, that last kiss you gave me. It was more special than all the others. Why? What words were you trying to speak with your lips?” I exhaled. “What I’ve tasted so far, in person and through the app, has only made me want more.”

“You didn’t crave those things with her?”

“No. I didn’t even know her, Love, nor did I take the time to know her.”

“Ohhh.”

I laughed. “You like that answer?”

“Mr.Boston, must I remind you that this app is for the kind of man and woman who don’t want a second round. It’s for adults who have the ability to move on without getting involved.”

Her tone told me she was teasing, flirting, trying to draw a reaction out of me.

A side of her that was completely adorable.

I couldn’t hide my smile. “Are you shooting me down, Love?” I didn’t wait for a response and continued, “Are you afraid I could give you everything you’ve ever wanted and you might develop feelings that are incredibly strong? I’m talking all-consuming, mind-blowing love, and suddenly ... you want to run?”

“Ahhh, two can play that game, huh?” I heard her grin. “I’m not afraid of anything, especially not love—I just don’t know that I’ve ever felt it before.”
