Bringing the engine to life, I throw the car into drive and floor it out of the clearing.

“I really hope you’re ready for this,” I warn, part of me still wishing we’d left JD at home. The next few hours could make him or break him for good.

I just fucking pray it’s not the latter.

MAVERICK

She tries to fight it, to save me from the agony of hearing her sobs and whimpers, but she can’t hold them in.

Each one hurts worse than any lashing from Victor’s whip or anything else they could do to me.

For as long as I can remember, Alana has been my ultimate weakness. Hurt her and it fucking kills me.

All three of them know it too.

And watching as they threw her onto that table and tied her up was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.

The way they looked at her. The way the three of them silently colluded about how the next few minutes were going to play out.

It was fucking agony like I’ve never felt before.

She’s mine.

My fucking wife.

And yet, they had her.

They’ve already stolen so much from her.

She didn’t deserve to go through it all again.

And all the while I was chained up and unable to do anything but watch in abject horror as they prepared to destroy her.

Because that was what I was on the verge of witnessing.

Alana is strong. So fucking strong. I’ve always been in awe of her ability to hold her head high and put one foot in front of the other despite what she’s been through. But enduring this all over again, the pain from her childhood, it had the power to finally tear her apart.

I thought it was going to happen.

Despite my demands they stop and her pleas for mercy, they had every intention of going through with it. Until Victor’s cell interrupted them.

At first, he looked like he was going to ignore it and continue. But when it started ringing for the third time, he pulled it from his pocket, cursed and answered it.

Only minutes later, the three of them walked out, leaving Alana in exactly the same position they’d put her in, ready to—

I retch, acid burning up my throat as I think about what I came so close to witnessing.

Unable to hide my reaction, Alana’s sobs get louder.

“It’s okay, Doll,” I force out, my throat burning.

I’ve no idea how long we’ve been here, but they haven’t so much as given us water. We’re not going to last much longer.

My vision is already fucked. I’ve got black spots floating around, and they’re only getting worse with every second that passes.

My body is wrecked, my muscles too weak to move, even if I could.
