But to my utter delight, he doesn’t, and only two seconds later, my hand brushes over his dick, straining against his pants.

Fire races through my veins and I let myself indulge in the one thing that gets me out of my own head.

A deep growl rumbles in the back of his throat as I continue to tease him.

Knowing he’s enjoying it, that he’s allowing me to do it, sends heat rushing between my legs.

I kiss him harder, deeper, my nails dragging across his scalp with my need for him to be closer. And he matches me move for move. His own desperation oozing from every glide of his tongue against mine.

“Mav.” I moan, rubbing my thighs together in the hope of finding some friction. “I need—”

Dragging his lip away, he rests his brow against mine and whispers, “To stop.”

“N-no,” I stutter, barely able to find the words. “That’s the opposite of what I need right now.

“I know, babe. But if we don’t, I’m going to do something I’ll really regret,” he says flatly before finally pulling fully away and pushing the door open.

“Oh.” I breathe, my body cooling faster than I thought possible, as the old unwelcome feelings of not being good enough churn inside me.

But before he climbs out, he reaches over and takes my chin in his grasp.

His grip is firm and holds a promise of all the things I so desperately want from him.

“Do not take that the wrong way, Doll. You cannot possibly imagine how many times I’ve fantasized about fucking you over the last few years,” he confesses, his dark eyes boring into mine. “It’s literally the only thing I dream about. But as much as I want it, I’m not doing it for the first time in the front seat of someone else’s car.”

The kiss he places on the tip of my nose at the end of that confession makes my eyes burn with emotion. Thankfully, he doesn’t see it because he turns his attention to the glove box.

“Here.” He growls, his voice rough with desire before dropping something heavy into my lap. “Take it everywhere you go. No exceptions.”

I glance down, and my eyes widen.

“Uh…”

“It’s loaded with a full clip. Don’t overthink it. If something seems off, just point and fire. Everything I’ve taught you will come back, I promise.”

He glances up at me as he takes his own gun and tucks it in the back of his pants before climbing from the car.

I stare down at the weapon.

It’s not that I’m not used to seeing them or being around them.

Mav has multiple guns in different places in our house. He’s spent hours teaching me to use one properly and hone my skills. But he’s never handed me one to keep before. Sure, he’s always told me that if anyone breaks in or comes to threaten me—namely Victor or our fathers—then I shouldn’t hesitate to use it, that he’d protect me from the fallout. But it never felt quite as real, quite as dangerous as this.

He pops the trunk behind me, forcing me into action.

Stuffing the gun into the pocket of my hoodie, I push the door open and join him at the back of the car.

“What’s in there?” I ask as he pulls the strap of a duffel bag over his shoulder.

“Everything we need.” After locking the car, he snags my hand and tugs me toward a track that I assume leads us to where we’re staying.

We’re engulfed by tree cover in seconds, and with the sound of the ocean filling my ears, I can’t help but think back to the conversation in the basement with JD about the places we dream about going.

I said the beach and he said the mountains. This has a little bit of both.

I wonder if he’d love it as much as I do already.

Thoughts of what—or who—we’ve left behind make my heart ache. Thankfully, Mav guides me around a corner and everything I was just thinking about is forgotten.
