“I’ve stitched up some of the deeper lacerations. Others should heal on their own. But you’ve got quite a lot of scar tissue back there so—”

“I got it.” I grunt, cutting him off. I really don’t want Alana to hear any more details than necessary about the first time I was in this mess.

“Okay, well. Looks like it’s your turn,” he says, the bed dipping as he climbs off.

Ripping my eyes away from Alana, I bite back the pain as I twist around as much as I can to see the man who’s fixing me up.

He’s an average-looking guy with a thick-rimmed pair of glasses on his face. Honestly, he’d look more at home sitting next to Ellis with a laptop in front of him than tending to my wounds, but whatever.

My brows pinch as he stops in front of JD, who’s sitting on the couch. Dropping to his knees, Jude lifts JD’s arm, allowing me to see the bandage there.

What the hell?

A frown forms on my brow, but then the mattress dips again and I’m distracted as Alana crawls onto the bed beside me and rests her head on the pillow, leaving only inches between us.

Her warm breath washes over my face, giving me a hit of the woman I’ve been utterly obsessed with for years.

All I want to do is roll onto my side, pull her into my body, and never let go.

“I love you,” I whisper instead, sliding my hand across the mattress so I can tangle our fingers together. It’s all I’m going to be getting for now.

“This is healing well,” Jude says in the background. “These stitches can probably come out in a few days.”

No one responds, making my curiosity burn brighter.

“I’ll cover this, but I don’t think you need such a big dressing. Just make sure you keep it clean and dry.”

The sound of the backing of another bandage being ripped off fills the air before he must press it to JD’s wrist.

“And as promised, I have a stash of your meds. I assume you know how you should be taking them.”

Silence.

“We’re aware,” Reid assures him. It’s the first time he’s made his presence known.

I can’t see him from my position, so I can only assume he’s standing in the doorway, watching over all of us like the mother hen he pretends not to be.

“Okay, well,” Jude says, getting to his feet.

“I’ll see you out,” Reid says, before their heavy footsteps disappear.

“Fuck,” JD breathes, but before either of us can say anything, he stalks over casting us both in his shadow.

“Hey, it’s good to see you awake, man,” he says, lifting his injured arm to scratch his chin as he looks from my face, to my destroyed back and then to my eyes again.

“You okay?” I ask, attempting to nod toward his own injury.

“Yeah, nothing that our girl here can’t fix,” he says nonchalantly. “Room for another one, Dove?” he asks. Although he doesn’t exactly wait for an answer. He just crawls into the small space behind her and wraps his arm around her waist.

“How are you feeling?” Alana asks, her eyes bouncing between mine.

“Fine.”

“Liar,” JD coughs, making Alana roll her eyes.

“Mav,” she warns. “No more secrets and lies. We’ve already agreed.”

I blow out a long breath. “How long have I been out?”
