“Not quite twenty-four hours.”

“Shit. What did I miss? Where are we?”

“At some mercenary safe house,” JD says, making my eyes widen.

“How the fuck—”

“Reid,” Alana says, as if that explains everything. Which, I guess it does.

“Right.”

“We’re in Hazard Grove. That connection you’ve got with Kai is solid, right?” JD teases.

“Uh…”

“It’s cool. Aubrey has sorted it.”

I want to ask, but honestly, I’m too exhausted to get too deep into all of this.

Just as Jude promised, the painkillers are kicking in and I can feel myself starting to drift.

“Never going to let them touch you again, Doll,” I whisper, my eyes closing as the darkness comes for me.

“Too fucking right. You’re ours now, Dove.” Heavy footsteps pound up the stairs before Reid’s dark presence fills the room. “The only men who will touch you again are inside this room,” JD promises.

It takes all my effort, but I manage to crack my eyes open just in time to see Alana glance at Reid.

My stomach knots, and my heart aches. But it’s nowhere near the reaction I would have had before all of this if I even thought about her being anywhere near him.

“Hey,” she says, reaching for my face again. My jaw itches the second she touches me, the beard I’m sporting too long and irritating.

“We’re gonna figure all this out,” Alana promises quietly.

“I know,” I whisper.

Leaning forward, she presses the softest of kisses against my lips.

The next time I wake, the room is in silence and the moment I open my eyes, I realize why.

I’m alone.

With a sigh, I attempt to move.

It hurts like fuck as my back muscles flex and pull, but I can’t lie here on my front any longer. I need to move. I need to pee.

By the time I’ve managed to shift myself into a sitting position, I’ve got sweat beading my brow and I can barely catch my breath.

“Fuck.” I gasp, spotting a bottle of water on the nightstand.

Reaching out, my hand trembles, and the entire thing wobbles and crashes to the floor with a thud.

Hanging my head in defeat, I stare at the offending bottle as it rolls to rest against my foot.

Not two seconds later, a series of feet pound up the stairs.

“Mav,” Alana cries before she races into the room, looking utterly terrified with Reid and JD hot on her tail. “Oh my God.” She gasps, rushing over to me and picking up the bottle. “You should have called for help,” she chastises.
