My lips part to agree, but she continues before I manage to get a word out.

“I have a very, very select team working on this with me,” she says, looking over her shoulder at Angel and Jose, who are standing guard behind her. “If the wrong people catch wind of us snooping where we’re not wanted, the result will be death, and not the fun kind.”

“I know what I’m doing,” I assure her again.

Luciana Rivera has shown very little emotion during this meeting, but right now, her mask is slipping. This isn’t just any mission she’s tasked herself with. It’s personal. I’d put everything I have on it.

“We will find out more and we will get the answers we need,” I promise her.

Her eyes narrow at my words, but she doesn’t respond to them.

“Angel has a phone for you. Do not give the number to anyone, and do not answer any call that doesn’t come from one of the three of us.”

“Understood.”

“If you need us, if you find anything out, call us. Day or night.”

“You got it.”

She nods at me and I push to stand, sensing that our meeting is over.

“Well, thank you for this… unexpected meeting.”

She stands and holds her hand out over the table.

“Hopefully next time we see each other, progress will have been made.”

Our palms connect and I’m shocked by how cold hers is.

“We will take them down,” I state confidently. “No matter how deep it runs, or where it takes us. We’ll make it happen.”

For the first time since I stepped into this room, a small smile spreads across Luciana’s face.

“That’s good to hear.”

Pulling my hand free, I snatch the thumb drive from the desk and walk around the chair ready to make my exit. I need to get the hell home to make sure Harrow Creek hasn’t burned to the ground in my absence. Honestly, it wouldn’t be all that much of a bad thing, but a few of my favorite people are there, and I would set the world alight if my cunt of a father hurt them any more than he already has.

I sense one of Luciana’s bodyguards behind me as I step up to the door, but I don’t turn to look.

“We have you booked on a flight in a few hours. I suggest you get some rest before it’s time to leave,” Luciana says behind me.

A rush of air passes my lips as relief tugs at my tired muscles.

“Will do, thank you,” I say before pulling the door open and stepping forward, ready to do as she just suggested.

“No, Reid,” she says, the tone of her voice stopping me in my tracks. “Thankyou.”

“I’ll be in touch,” I promise her before walking out of the room and down the hallway in the direction of my room.

“Can I have my cell back now?” I demand when I get to my door, and turn to glare at whoever is following me.

Angel gives me an apologetic smile.

“Luciana’s safety comes first,” he says simply.

“I’m not going to—” I swallow my words when it becomes very clear by his expression alone that there is nothing I can say that will change his mind.

“What time is my flight?”
