She wants to tell me that everything is okay, we’re together now. But she knows she can’t.

Nothing from here on out can be predicted.

I hate it.

Fucking hate it.

Once Sienna is confident that Kristie is stable and has explained to me what to expect when Kristie wakes up, she packs up her things and takes a step back from the bed.

“I’m going to be in Chicago for a few days. I’m at the end of the phone if any of you need anything.”

“Thank you,” I whisper, feeling utterly hopeless.

“I know it’s hard, but she’s the one who has to make a decision here. Forcing her hand won’t get you anywhere in the long run.” I nod. Hating just how painfully true her words are.

“I know.”

“All she needs from you right now is just to be here for her. The next few days and weeks are going to be rough.”

“Thank you,” I say again, fighting to keep my tears from spilling over.

Lifting her bag from the bed, she squeezes my shoulder before walking to the door.

With one last look at my sister, she slips from the room, leaving us alone for the first time since I found her in that dirty shower.

She needs a bath desperately. Her skin is dirty, her hair is greasy and knotty, and when I reach for her hand, I find that beneath her nails are black.

As I lie down beside her and pull the thick, fluffy blanket over both of us, I think back to better days when she used to let me do her hair and nails.

She always had to have pink everything and as much glitter as I could use.

She was such a girly girl, and I loved it. She was like my personal Barbie doll, and she loved the attention. Hell knows that after Mom… left… that she didn’t get any from elsewhere.

Twisting my fingers with hers, I hold her hand tight.

“We’re going to get through this, KK,” I promise. “The men who have done this to us are going to pay. Dad is going to pay.”

“We’re going to find him, and we’re going to make sure he knows how it feels to be betrayed by those who are meant to love him.”

Long silent minutes pass. I can’t hear anything other than her shallow breathing.

Sienna didn’t know when she’d wake. She told me that I just have to wait.

I’ll wait as long as it takes. What’s a few more hours when it’s already been years?

But as much as I want to watch over her, it’s not long before my eyes begin to get heavy and I succumb to my own exhaustion.

Movement beside me drags me from the depths of sleep, but it’s not until a deep pained grunt fills the air that I fully come to.

My eyes fly open as the bed shifts beneath me.

Pushing up on my elbow, I find JD lying across the bottom of the bed clutching his junk with tears in his eyes.

It takes a second for reality to hit, and when it does, my head whips around to the girl lying beside me.

“Kristie?” I breathe as she begins thrashing. “Whoa.” I gasp, barely missing her flailing arm.
