“She needs us, man. All of us. Go and show her how you feel, even if you can’t tell her.”

His lips part to argue, but he wisely shuts the hell up.

“Support her. Hold her. Whisper promises of pain and death for those who’ve hurt her in her ear,” I say with a shrug. “Whatever it is that makes her look at you with those mushy eyes.”

“She doesn’t look at me with?—”

“She does. Now get in there and find out.”

He nods and pushes to his feet. He hesitates before pushing the door open, but not long enough for me to say anything.

Leaning forward, I rest my elbows on my knees and study Kristie.

She’s not looking good. Awful, in fact. And I can only imagine that it will get worse when she wakes.

She’s got a decision to make in the coming hours. One she isn’t going to like. Alana either. But it’s got to happen.

As much as we all might like to hide out here and see if we can help get her life back on track, we’ve got some other shit to take care of. And it’s not the kind of thing that’ll wait.

We’ve shown our hand by taking out Razor. Victor is going to be gunning for us. And a trip to Chicago isn’t going to stop him.

Here, we’re mostly unarmed and unprepared.

It can’t happen here. We’d lose.

And that is not how all of this ends.

Movement in the bathroom catches my attention, and I turn my thoughts to her. To them.

Not a second later, Mav emerges with a towel around him and his clothes in his hand.

“All good, man?”

“Y-yeah,” he stutters, looking back over his shoulder. “Reid’s… taking her makeup off,” he says with a frown. “Something I never thought I’d see.”

I chuckle, loving that my best friend is discovering his softer side. Unable to miss it, I rush over to the door and peek inside.

He has her wrapped up in a huge, fluffy towel and has lifted her onto the marble counter.

Her legs are wrapped around his waist, one hand around the side of his neck, and she’s staring at him like he’s the only man on the planet as he wipes a cotton pad across her cheek.

The scene is so intimate, despite the fact he’s still fully dressed.

My heart pounds just watching them.

Everything he feels for her is right there for the taking. I just pray he can feel it. Acknowledge how fucking special it is.

More than anything, I hope she knows it. Feels it. Embraces it. Nurtures it.

“Crazy, huh?” Mav mutters behind me.

“Yeah,” I muse, backing away from the door and leaving them to their moment. “Bet you never expected to see that,” I tease as he pulls on his clothes.

He grunts. “Never expected any of this, let alone that.”

“Missing the good old days when it was just the two of you?”

He pauses and looks up before his eyes dart to the closed bathroom door.
