“Yes and no,” he confesses, making me frown. “Those times were good. Epic, actually. But right now… I dunno, man. Things feel…”

“Right?” I offer, knowing it’s exactly how I feel down to my very core.

“I mean, I could do without the sharing,” he deadpans, rolling his eyes. “But, yeah. Things feel right. Good.”

“Oh shush, you loved it back there. I felt your knuckles graze my hip in a loving way.”

He scoffs, “Keep dreaming. There’s only one person who’s ever getting a loving touch from me, and it ain’t you.”

I roll my eyes. “Such a stick in the mud.”

He glances up at me but refrains from commenting any further.

“You hungry?” I ask as I walk toward the windows, my stomach growling unhappily.

“I could eat,” he says before dropping onto the couch and pulling his cell from his pocket.

Turning back to the windows, I watch as the sun rises behind the tall buildings. It’s a far cry from the view we’re used to at home, but I kinda like it.

The hustle and bustle on the streets beneath us. The constant rush of traffic, no matter what the time is. The life, the energy. That’s something that’s been missing in Harrow Creek for… for as long as I can remember.

“What do you want?” Mav asks after a few minutes.

“Whatever. Anything.”

He chuckles darkly, making me regret those words instantly.

“As long as it involves bacon, I’m good.”

“Bacon, right,” he mutters.

Shaking my head, I spin around and rest my ass against the window.

“You think she’s going to give us a hard time?” I ask, watching Kristie sleep.

“Wha— oh. I mean, she’s a Winson girl, wouldn’t you be disappointed if she made life easy for us.”

I shake my head.

“She deserves better than this.”

“They both do,” Mav muses.

“Hey, speak for yourself.”

“It’s going to kill Alana if she doesn’t want to fight this. If she doesn’t want to leave,” Mav says, ignoring my attempt to lighten the mood.

“Then we need to make sure that won’t happen.”

“We can’t force this. You heard what Sienna said.”

I scrub the back of my neck, remembering her words to us after she left Alana with Kristie.

“I know. I just… I want Alana to have her sister back.”

“Me too, man. Me too.”

Kristie groans and I leap forward, ready to be there for her if she wakes.
