“Baby,” he warns. “She needs you strong.”

Pushing from his seat, he moves closer to her before physically lifting her and placing her into his lap so he can feed her.

It’s weird seeing him so concerned for another person’s well-being. But also nice at the same time.

While he’s worrying about her, he’s not getting all up in his own head.

We all watch as Alana does as she’s told and eats some more rice.

“I’m gonna go and get some air,” I say after a few minutes.

Grabbing my bottle of beer, I march toward the doors that will lead to the balcony beyond.

The bitter winter air hits me the second I pull the door open, but it doesn’t deter me.

Shutting them inside, I walk to the railing and rest my elbows on it.

The wind whips around me, each drop of rain is like being hit by little knives.

Closing my eyes, I lower my head and just breathe.

The sound of the traffic below fills the air along with the wind howling through the high-rise buildings.

There are sirens in the distance. Another reminder that we’ve left our relatively small town in favor of a big city.

My cell buzzes in my pocket, but I ignore it.

It’s been the same for days. But nothing has been of any use.

We left Griff behind with a small trusted team trying to find Victor and Kurt. Others are working on the list of establishments and the names Luciana gave me. But they’re all coming up empty-handed.

It shouldn’t be this hard.

Victor might be formidable. But he isn’t better than us.

He’s just not.

Kurt either.

Scrubbing my hand down my face, I drain my bottle and stand tall, tipping my face to the sky, letting the rain do its thing.

I’ve no idea how much time passes, but I’m soaked through when the door opens behind me.

“Can’t say that this looks fun,” Aubrey says.

“Then why are you joining me?” I ask without looking over.

“You look sad and lonely.”

“Never bothered you before,” I deadpan.

“Ouch. That hurts, Harris,” she teases.

I shake my head and turn back to the view. Not a second later, her arm brushes against mine as she mimics my stance.

“I’ve got a job,” she says, staring ahead.

“Okay,” I say.
