Honestly, I wasn’t expecting her to hang around as long as she has. I initially only requested her help for a few days. I naïvely thought she’d help us finish this thing off and that we’d be living our best lives by now.

“I’d say no but?—”

“It’s okay, Aubs. You’ve got a life. You need to go and do your thing.”

“But—”

“We’ll be okay. We’re going to figure all this out and find a way through it.”

“If I could stay, I’d?—”

“I know,” I say, turning to her. “You’ve already done more than I could ever have asked of you.”

She shrugs, not taking the compliment easily. “Well, you know me. Always an overachiever.”

“When are you heading out?” I ask.

“In like… an hour,” she confesses regretfully. “You’re good to stay here for a few more days, but then?—”

“We’ve got shit covered, Aubs. We need to get home.”

“That’s what I’m worried about.”

“Aw, you’re worried about little ol’ me?” I tease.

“Nah, not really. I quite like Alana though. She’s fun.”

I shake my head laughing.

“JD is still a prick, but I can cope with Mav.”

Reaching out, I pull her in for a hug. “Gonna miss you, Kendrick,” I confess.

“Aw, you’re going soft in your old age,” she says back, making me roll my eyes. “I guess falling in love does that.”

I release her. “I haven’t?—”

“Oh, come off it. You are so fucking in love with that woman in there.”

My eyes dart to where Alana is still sitting on JD’s lap, letting him care for her.

“It’s sweet. Totally unconventional and fucked up, but sweet all the same.”

“It works,” I muse.

“Yeah, it does. You look happy. It’s nice.”

“I’ll be happier when we no longer have to look over our shoulders,” I mutter.

“It’s coming. Have faith.”

I nod.

“I’m gonna pack up my shit. Sienna is coming later to check in on Kristie.”

“As soon as Sienna is happy with her condition, we’re going home,” I say, making a rash decision.

“You think she’s ready for that?”
