“You think she wants to stay here any longer than necessary?”

“Fair. She’s going to be okay. There’s strength in those blue eyes.”

“Yeah,” I agree. “Just like her big sister.”

“What doesn’t break us makes us stronger and all that.”

As promised, Aubrey said her goodbyes and left us an hour later.

Sienna stopped by, but she didn’t stay long after checking in on Kristie.

And once again, the five of us all attempted to get some sleep in one room.

JD took the spot beside Alana. He wasn’t brave enough to lie at the bottom after having his balls kicked the night before. Mav claimed the couch and I took the chair by the window.

While the others seemed to get a good few hours, I barely got any sleep. Instead, I spent most of the night trying to deal with our shit from a distance.

Aubrey had left me with her contact so that we could get a plane back, and I spoke to Doc, letting him know what was going on.

I didn’t want to drag him into this. He’s put his neck on the line enough for us recently, but I also wasn’t risking Kristie not having medical attention if she needed it.

Sienna promised another visit tomorrow but had left us with something to help Kristie travel, if needed.

As the sun began to rise over the city, I started to wonder if I could make use of it.

I can’t remember the last time I got some decent sleep, and the effects are starting to show.

I was feeling vulnerable, and that is the very last thing I need while trying to deal with my father.

In the end, my need to do something gets the better of me and I leave everyone to sleep in favor of ordering us all breakfast and organizing our impending return to Harrow Creek.

“Hey,” J says, strolling into the room.

His hair is a mess and he’s got a pillow crease on his cheek. He’s still shirtless and he’s got his hands stuffed into his sweats. It’s a pretty standard sight after all the years we’ve been living together.

“Morning,” I say, hitting the button on the coffee machine for my third coffee of the day. “Managed to peel yourself from Alana’s side, I see.”

“Jealous, bro?” he teases, hopping up on one of the stools at the island.

“Fuck off.” I grunt, making him chuckle. “I’m making arrangements to go home tomorrow.”

“We’re really going straight back, huh?” he asks, curiously.

“We need to. Staying here isn’t helpful for anyone.”

I spend a few minutes filling him in on what’s happened overnight—not that it’s anything of importance before footsteps get closer.

“Morning,” JD says as Mav joins us.

“They still sleeping?” I ask.

“Yeah, although Kristie is restless so I’m not sure how much longer that will be the case.”

“The next few days are going to be a bitch for her.”

“She can do it,” I say confidently, remembering Aubrey’s words about her strength.
