I’ve had the ability to do that ripped away from me for five years. And no, there is nothing I can do but hold her hand and hope I’m saying the right things.

She wants this. I can see it in her eyes. But I can also see how much it’s killing her.

And we’re only on day two.

I’ve done some research while she’s been sleeping. Sienna might have given me the basics of what to expect. But it wasn’t enough.

I need to prepare for what might come, for what it’s going to take to help get her through this. And I don’t just mean in the short term.

Getting her away from Chicago and the men responsible for getting her in this state is one thing. But the future… getting clean and making it stick long-term is going to be a lot of work.

I just wish I could take some of the pain.

“I’ve got her,” Mav says, slipping his hands under her tiny body and lifting her into his chest.

He cradles her like a child and my heart fractures in my chest.

She is just a child. Yes, she might be eighteen, she might have had some of the best years of her life ripped away from her, and experienced things most adults never have the misfortune of experiencing. But to me, she’ll always be my sweet little sister who had the biggest smile and an even bigger heart.

I rush out of the car behind them and open the doors.

“She can take the room next to JD’s,” Reid calls before we’re out of earshot.

In only minutes, we’re inside his guest room and Mav is lowering Kristie onto the bed.

No sooner has he released her, does she curl up in the fetal position and scream in agony.

“Shit,” I gasp, jumping onto the bed with her.

I don’t know if I startle her or what, but the second I touch her, she flings her arm back, her hand colliding with my cheek.

I hiss in pain, my eyes flooding with water.

“Fuck, are you okay?” Mav asks, rushing to my side.

“Yeah.” I wave him off as Kristie curls into a tighter ball and begins sobbing.

Whatever pain I might be feeling from that hit is nothing compared to what she’s feeling right now.

“Go and do what you need to do. I’ve got you, you need to focus on Sheila and Daisy.”

“Fuck, Doll,” he breathes, standing over me and resting his forehead on the top of my head.

“I know,” I say sadly, wrapping my arms around him. “But you’ll find them.”

“I didn’t want this for her,” he whispers brokenly.

“Mav,” I say, looking up so he has no choice but to look at me. “You did everything you could,” I assure him.

“No. I should have made them?—”

“Mav,” I warn, reaching up to press two fingers to his lips. “You did everything you could. Sheila is her main guardian. It was her decision to stay, you can’t take on the burden of that.”

“Fuck. I love you, Doll.”

“I love you too.

I… I told the others. About Daisy,” he confesses.
