“They’ll find her, Mav. And when they do, we’ll all be here for her,” I promise him.

Kristie cries out again, her legs thrashing against the mattress.

“Go. Go find them.”

He nods sadly before tilting my chin up and stealing my lips in a quick kiss.

“One day soon, Doll, we’re going to be living the life you always dreamed of,” he promises me.

My nose itches with emotion as I stare into his dark eyes.

“I can’t wait,” I whisper, wishing that all this was over and we could embark on that future right now.

After another kiss, he backs out with the promise that one of them will come back up with food and drink. Not that I think Kristie will be interested in any of it.

Twisting around, I shuffle closer to where she’s rocking on the bed.

Her skin is slick with sweat and her nose is running.

Everything in me deflates as I watch her struggle.

Reaching out, I rest my hand on her upper arm. It’s the only thing I can think to do right now. I just have to hope my presence is some kind of support to her.

I soon find that not to be the case when she jerks away from me.

“Kristie,” I sigh.

“Just go,” she mutters.

“No. I’m not letting you do this alone,” I state.

She doesn’t respond, but she also doesn’t fight me either, so I figure that it could be worse.

Not wanting to completely defy her wishes, I climb off the bed in favor of the chair.

Turning it so that I can see both Kristie and the view of the Creek out the window, I curl up and wrap my arms around my legs.

Resting my head back, I stare absently at the valley beneath us, wondering what’s happening down there. Wondering if Sheila and Daisy are there suffering, or if our father has taken them out of town.

Whatever he’s done, he’s not going to make this easy on us.

What I said in that penthouse was true. I’d swap places with Daisy in a heartbeat. If I thought it would help, I’d call Dad right now and demand a location for the switch.

But that isn’t how my father works. He might want me, but he won’t give up that easily.

He wants all of us.

We killed Razor. He’ll want vengeance.

We escaped Victor. He’ll want penance.

I ran from him all those years ago and protected myself the only way I knew how. He’ll want revenge.

Kristie’s cries continue to fill the room, each one cuts through me like small knives.

I just want it all over.

And the only way that can happen is to trust the men downstairs.
