“And you were happy about him agreeing to that?”

I don’t respond straight away; instead, I think back to the time Mav came home to tell me what Ivy had asked of him.

“It was a unique situation.” A bitter laugh spills from my lips. “Pretty much like my entire life, really. Nothing about it has ever been normal.”

Pain and anguish from the life I’ve lived up until this point knots up my insides.

“I can’t have kids, Julian. What I said about Kane that landed me here in the first place was a bullshit lie Victor told me to tell.”

“Okay,” he says quietly.

I glance over at Kristie, needing to see if she’s sleeping. I can’t go down this road if there’s any chance of her hearing. She can’t handle that. Not yet, at least.

Confident that she’s asleep, my lips open and close as I try and find the right words.

“You know what my younger years were like,” I say after resting my head on his shoulder so I can whisper into his ear. “I’m sure you don’t need the details of the things I endured.”

His entire body tenses beneath mine, letting me know that he understands my unspoken words.

“Well, I was too young, my body wasn’t ready for the things they?—”

“They did this?” he barks, sitting forward with such force that we both slosh coffee everywhere. “Shit,” he hisses as I jump to my feet to attempt to clean it up.

Kristie groans, disturbed by us moving around.

“Come on,” JD says, grabbing my hand and tugging me toward the open bathroom door.

“J, I can’t leave?—”

“We’re not leaving her. We’re right here,” he says, tugging me deeper into the bathroom and kicking the door almost closed. “We’re going to wake her if we stay and she needs to rest,” he says, caging me in against the wall with his palms planted on either side of my head.

“Julian,” I breathe, staring up into his pained blue eyes.

“Fuck, Dove,” he sighs, leaning forward and resting his brow against mine.

“I’m sorry,” I blurt, my eyes filling with tears as I think about what I’m taking away from him.

“Shush,” he soothes. “You’ve nothing to apologize for.”

I hiccup as I fight with the emotions that are threatening to bubble up.

“B-but you want?—”

“You,” he says, cutting me off as his warm palm covers my jaw. “I want you, baby. And there isn’t anything that you’ve been through that will ever make me want you less.”

A sob rips from my throat.

“I want whatever future you can give me. I don’t care about the details as long as you’re by my side.”

Throwing my arms around his shoulders, I pull him close and find his lips.

“That’s what I’m talking about.” He moans into our kiss before his hands drop to my ass, lifting me from the floor so I can wrap my legs around his waist.

“As long as I have you, little dove. I’ll be the happiest man on the planet.”

My tears finally spill over, cascading down my cheeks until I can taste them in our kiss.

If I thought that would stop him, then I’m hugely mistaken because it only heats things up further between us.
