REID

Mav paces back and forth across the room as I stare aimlessly at my computer screen.

In the past when shit’s hit the fan, I’ve got out there and in the middle of it all to try and find some answers.

But I can’t do that now.

Yes, Victor and Kurt know we’re alive now but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stick my head above the parapet before I have to.

“Where the fuck are they?” Mav mutters, looking at the clock for the millionth time in the past hour.

“They’ll be here,” I assure him.

Up until he got those messages yesterday, I refused to let my brothers get involved in this shit with Victor.

They needed to continue with their lives, their jobs and their studies.

But Kurt changed all that with one picture and two messages.

We needed backup, and as much as we could fucking get.

My knee bounces as my own impatience gets the better of me.

There’s a chance they’ve been intercepted, but I refuse to believe it’s the case.

My little brothers might have their moments, but they’re good fucking foot soldiers.

Almost fifteen minutes after they promised they’d be here, the sound of the front door opening fills the air before heavy footsteps move this way.

“About fucking time,” Mav mutters, combing his fingers through his hair in frustration.

The door to my office swings open a beat before Griff, Devin, Ezra, Ellis, and Cash march through.

I scan each of their eyes, silently thanking them for doing this. My attention lingers on Cash the longest.

It’s been a while since I called on him. A long fucking time actually.

I just pray that he’s still got my back because we need all the manpower we can get right now.

“Anything?” I ask before more footsteps race our way.

“Sorry,” JD says, bursting into the room with Alana hot on his tails.

I give her a double take.

It’s the first time I’ve seen her out of my guest room since we arrived back home.

Kristie has been struggling. Her withdrawal symptoms are getting worse with every minute that passes.

And while she’s hurting, so is our girl.

“Come here, Pet,” I say, holding my arm out for her.

I’ve barely seen her since we’ve been back. While she’s been hibernating with Kristie, I’ve been down here trying to fix this shitshow.

I miss her, damn it.
