Sure, the two of them looked totally different. Daisy has beautiful dark curly hair to Kristie’s blonde and straight. But it didn’t matter. The loss I felt all the way down to my soul. Looking at this little girl ripped me to shreds. It’s how I knew she was in the right place.

I’d never, ever, turn my back on her. If Daisy needed me, I’d have been there in a heartbeat. But she belonged with Sheila. They needed each other.

I lose myself watching JD interact with the little girl, and the way both of their eyes light up as they interact.

Mav is watching them too, and when I glance over, I see the same awe in his eyes as I feel.

Reid’s cell ringing through the speakers soon cuts them off and successfully rips our attention back to reality.

“Anything?” Reid demands the second the call connects.

“You need to get out of the car,” a calm yet familiar voice demands.

“W-what?”

“Reid, pull over and get out of the fucking car.”

“Elli—”

“Get out of the fucking car.” This time there is enough panic in his tone that Reid immediately jerks the car to the left.

My arms wrap around Daisy just in time to stop her from flying from my lap, and she cries out as the car jolts to a stop and all four doors are thrown open.

“Dove,” JD shouts when I don’t move fast enough.

I barely get a chance to blink before he reaches into the car and hauls the two of us out.

Daisy trembles in fear in my arms.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” I soothe, desperately trying to keep the terror out of my voice.

JD drags us to a stop a good twenty feet away from the car and when I turn around, I find Reid and Mav pulling my father from the trunk.

“What are you doing?” I scream, my eyes dropping to the smirk on the asshole’s face.

“It would be too easy to allow him to go up in a fireball, Pet,” Reid explains a beat before a loud bang cuts through the air.

There’s a bright, blinding flash in front of us before we’re all thrown backward with the force of the explosion.

Tucking Daisy tightly into my body, I curl myself around her and twist so that she lands on me and not the other way around.

We hit the ground hard, sending pain shooting down my back, but I don’t have time to focus on that.

“Reid, Mav,” I cry, blinking against the smoke thickening around us as the fire engulfing the car crackles loudly.

I race forward at the same time as JD and Griff, and find them both rolling on the ground, my father between them.

“Are you okay?” I shout over the noise surrounding us.

“Yeah,” Mav groans as Reid rolls onto his hands and knees then climbs to his feet.

“We’re good, Pet. We both had a soft landing,” he says, shooting a glare at the man still out cold on the ground.

“Nice for him to come in useful for something,” JD deadpans as Daisy pulls her face from my neck.

“What appened?” Daisy asks quietly.

“Problem with the car,” I explain. “Nothing to worry about. Everyone is safe.”
