“Yeah, what fucking leader gets in a car without checking for bugs and explosives?” Ezra joins in.

Reid shakes his head, trying to play it off. But when his eyes catch mine, I see the disappointment in his eyes.

He fucked up tonight. Almost got us all killed. That isn’t something that’s going to sit well with him.

“Hey,” I say, stepping up to him and wrapping my free arm around his waist. “Everyone is okay. We’ve got Kurt. You did good tonight,” I whisper in his ear.

“Hey there, little lady,” Ezra says, his eyes lighting up at the sight of Daisy.

She watches him as he smiles at her, but after a few seconds, her grip on my neck loosens and she holds her arms out to him.

“What the fuck?” Devin mutters, watching in astonishment.

“What?” Ezra asks as he takes her from my arms. “Girls love me.”

“It’s because he’s still a kid himself, at heart,” Ellis explains as JD steps up to my other side.

“Pfft, says the one who spends all his time playing on his computer.”

“Playing?” Ellis deadpans.

“This is fun and all,” Mav pipes up, watching Ezra and Daisy closely. “But any chance we can get the fuck out of here? Someone tried killing us all tonight and we’re like sitting fucking ducks here.”

“Bad words,” Daisy chastises, making everyone laugh.

Reid dips his head low, his lips brushing my ears. “Did you mean what you said about my place?”

I’ve no idea how he latches onto that one throwaway comment after everything that’s happened tonight. But for some reason he does, and when I turn around to meet his eyes, I find a seriousness that I’m not expecting staring back at me.

“It’s my favorite place because I know it’s where all my favorite people are,” I say honestly.

He coughs to clear his throat but never says anything. Instead, he swallows thickly before turning to Devin.

“Is the house clear?”

“Yeah, no sign of any disturbances.”

“Clearly thought taking you all out on the road was easier than battling your defenses,” Ellis offers helpfully.

“Are you gonna give us a lift back, or what?” Reid hisses.

“Sure, but if this asshole gets any blood in my trunk…” Devin mutters before planting his steel-toe-capped boot into my father’s stomach.

He grunts, letting us know that he is actually alive before attempting to curl in on himself.

“Couldn’t have happened to a nicer cunt.”

“More bad words,” Daisy chastises, making Ezra chuckle.

“You lot are so not ready for this,” he warns.

“Ready for what?” Devin asks.

Reid and Mav shake their heads as they move toward Kurt, ready to throw him into the back of another car.

“You’re cute, Dev,” JD says as Ezra hands Daisy back to me.

“Hide and seek?” she asks him.
