Reid furiously taps away on his cell as Devin drives us home. Mav stares out the window, his jaw ticking as he attempts to process everything that’s happened tonight.

It only takes a few minutes for Daisy to completely relax against me, her breathing getting heavy as sleep pulls her under.

After what she’s experienced these past few days, it’s probably the best place she can be.

All of us are on alert as Devin drives down the track that leads to the hidden back entrance to Reid’s manor.

But thankfully, there is no sign of anyone, or that anyone has been here.

When we get to the gates, Devin goes through the rigmarole of getting inside before we’re eventually heading toward the garages, both Devin and Reid checking the mirrors to ensure no one is following us.

Silently, we all climb out of the car.

“Take her up to bed,” Reid says quietly, watching me curiously with a toddler in my arms. “We’ll sort things down here.”

With a nod, I spin around and march toward the door, expecting Alana to follow.

But when I look back, she’s loitering, unable to decide where she needs to be most.

“He doesn’t deserve your time, Dove. This little one, however…”

With a resigned sigh, she gives Mav and Reid a quick kiss on the lips before following me into the house.

She overtakes me, opening doors, and then pulling back the sheets to the bed that Mav and her have claimed.

As gently as I can, I lower Daisy into it.

At some point, she put her thumb into her mouth and she’s sucking it like she’s worried it’ll fall off if she releases it.

I take a step back as Alana tucks her in.

“She looks so tiny,” I muse quietly, taking in the small lump in the bed.

“She is. I mean, I’m no expert, but I think she’s still smaller than average for her age.”

“She’s cute,” I say, walking up behind Alana, wrapping my arms around her and resting my chin on her shoulder.

“She is. She didn’t deserve any of this.”

“She’ll be okay. She’s young. She’ll probably forget all of this ever happened,” I say hopefully.

Alana doesn’t say anything; she just watches Daisy sleep peacefully.

“What do you need, Dove?” I ask, wanting to do anything I can to make this easier for her.

“Answers,” she says simply.

“Wish I had them for you, baby.”

“Someone does. And I’m going to do whatever it takes to make him talk.”

“You realize how hard Reid gets when you talk like that, right?”

A laugh punches from her throat.

“I need to go and see Kristie. Will you stay here with Daisy?” she asks, twisting out of my arms.

“Of course.”
