None of us knew the guy, but the fact that Aubrey vouched for him meant that we all immediately trusted him. So the fact he fucked us over hurts.

“Good.” I fume, betrayal dripping through my veins.

He moves closer when I don’t follow that single word up with anything else.

Taking my cheeks in his dirty hands, he lowers down to stare into my eyes.

I wait for him to speak, but no words come.

“What now?” I whisper.

They found us. They almost got us.

I can’t help but feel like we’re losing right now.

“Now, we sit tight. They think we’re all dead and we need to allow them to continue to think that while we plan our next move.”

“Malakai Saint?” I ask, praying that the information that they have given me is correct and that they’re not just feeding me with bullshit to pacify me.

“Yes,” he agrees.

“Victor might have made the first move, but he won’t make the last. We’re going to beat them, Doll.”

I nod. What else can I do?

“Promise me that you’ll never do that to me again,” I beg.

“I promise.”

“Even if Reid tries to pull rank, I want you to tell me.”

He swallows thickly as he considers my words.

“Mav,” I warn.

“I promise. I should have fought harder for you.”

I nod.

“Come on, let’s clean you up. You need to rest.”

“I’m okay. I?—”

I rear back, my eyes wide. “Lie to me again, Maverick Murray. I dare you.”

A huge breath rushes from his lungs.

“Yeah,” he agrees before ducking his head and brushing his lips against mine. “You kissed Reid before me.”

His hand slips around the back of my neck, allowing him to control the kiss as he plunges his tongue into my mouth.

“He didn’t deserve it,” he mumbles.

I can’t help but agree.

Breaking the kiss long before I’m ready, he rests his brow against mine.

“I love you, Doll. Everything I ever do is for you; I need you to know that.”
