ALANA

With my fingers intertwined with Mav’s, I drag him up the stairs. Not that he needs all that much encouragement.

My feet stomp loudly against each step, making them creak louder than I’ve ever known. But the actions do little to expel the pent-up anger and frustration that is bubbling just under my skin.

They lied to me.

They kept me in the dark.

The didn’t fucking trust me.

Okay, so that final one isn’t entirely true, but it doesn’t matter.

They promised me that we were a team and there they were only days later colluding to keep me from what was happening.

They allowed me to watch that house go up.

They let me believe?—

“ARGH,” I scream the second I storm into the room that Mav and I claimed as ours before our midnight escape.

“Doll,” he soothes.

Marching toward the window, I stare out, although I don’t really see anything.

The only image in my head right now is that fireball engulfing the safe house.

Wrapping my arms around myself, I let my head fall back and stare up at the ceiling.

“I told them it was a stupid idea,” Mav repeats. “I wanted to tell you.”

“You should have,” I whisper.

“Yeah, maybe I should. But I also want you safe. And Reid did have a point.”

“Fucking hell,” I mutter.

“Aubrey was meant to explain before—” Reid starts.

“Youcould have explained,” I breathe, turning around to glare at him.

He looks wrecked.

His arms and face are covered in dirt. I can only assume that his clothes were in a similar state to JD’s when he emerged.

Only, he followed the boss’s orders and stripped off.

Ducking his head, he looks up at me through his lashes. If he thinks that look is going to be enough to make me forget all of this then he really needs to think again.

“I know you’re pissed, Doll. But we’re all safe. Everyone is okay.”

“What happened to Jude?” I blurt.

Mav’s chin drops a beat before anger darkens his eyes.

“Reid shot him. He’ll be nothing but ash now.”
