“Uh… yes. Without hesitation. Victor doesn’t care about anyone but himself. They were only in his inner circle because he allowed them to be. They were useful to him. Kept his secrets and allowed him to continue doing whatever the fuck he wanted. There was no loyalty there. Victor hasn’t got a loyal bone in his body.”

“You’ve got him though, right?” I whisper.

While Reid might have been diligently making our meals and stealing Daisy’s heart one pancake at a time, it’s about the only time we’ve seen him. Every other minute of the day, he’s been locked in his office, constantly on the phone discussing… something.

And there is only one something I can come up with.

He has intel. He’s making a plan.

Something is going to happen very soon. He’s just waiting until he has all his ducks in a row.

“Pet,” he warns, unwilling to share whatever it is he knows.

“I know. I know,” I say, sliding my hands up his chest and stretching up onto my toes so I can link my fingers behind his neck. “I trust you. I’m just?—’

“Impatient?” He chuckles.

“I’m ready for life to start, Reid. I want to take Daisy outside of this place. I want to take her to a diner, take her shopping, to the park.”

“I know. And you will. Soon. I promise.”

Unease washes through me. While he might be making such promises, it’s impossible to ignore the truth behind his words.

We’re about to go to war, and we’ve no idea who will be standing at the end of it.

A series of beeps ring out around the room, alerting us all to there being someone at the back gate.

Reid is the first one to pull his cell free. The second his eyes land on whoever is on the other end of the camera, he relaxes.

“Again?” he groans. “Pretty sure I saw his ugly face less when we lived in the same house.”

Shaking his head, Reid wraps his hand around the back of my neck and drags me in for a kiss.

We’ve both taken our seats and have loaded our plates when the sound of the backdoor slamming echoes through the house.

“Uncle Ezwa is here,” Daisy says excitedly, also having guessed who it is.

“Good morning, family,” he says, poking his head around the door. His eyes find Daisy first before they stray to the remaining pancakes. “And it looks like I’m just in time. I knew going to bed was a bad idea.”

“You haven’t been to bed?” Griff asks.

“Nah, came straight from a party.”

“Oh, to be young again,” he mutters.

“Should you have been driving?” I ask, hating that I sound like a middle-aged woman?

“Aw, you worried about me?” Ezra asks, glancing over as he steals a pancake from the stash and stuffs it in his mouth.

“Not overly, no. But if you’re not alert, you could have allowed someone?—”

“I would not put this little angel in any kind of risk,” he says, tickling Daisy under the chin and making her giggle.

“But I have gifts and news,” he says, holding the bag up that’s swinging from his fingers.

Daisy claps her little hands excitedly while Reid groans. “This better be good. I’m not in the mood for more of your wild dream girls.”
